Actor Julian McMahon, who once played Doctor Doom in the Fantastic Four films of the mid-2000s, shares his thoughts on Robert Downey Jr.’s portrayal as the antagonist in the Marvel Cinematic Universe. During a promotional event for his film The Surfer at the 2025 SXSW Festival, McMahon spoke with Screen Rant, and when asked about his Marvel experience, he not only offered high praise for Downey, but also reminisced about his Fantastic Four movies. These films were produced during a period when contemporary comic book adaptations were still trying to find their footing.
McMahon remarked, “It’s me, and I think you understand. What do you have to add? He’s incredibly skilled, a true talent. Watching his work is always a joy for me. During the movies we made years ago, we were right on the brink of everything taking off. Consequently, we were feeling our way through many aspects and trying to determine where the movie belonged. Was it meant for kids? For families? Did it lean more towards comedy or trauma? We were figuring all that out as we went along while filming.
McMahon added, “Given the various perspectives on interpreting art, there are numerous possibilities now. With an artist like Robert Downey Jr, a creative powerhouse over the past few years, combined with modern filmmaking techniques? I believe the result will be quite remarkable.
Following his unexpected return to the Marvel Cinematic Universe, it was revealed at San Diego Comic-Con 2024 that Robert Downey Jr. will reprise his role, this time as Doctor Doom, serving as the primary villain in “Avengers: Doomsday” and “Avengers: Secret Wars”. In these upcoming films, he takes over Kang the Conqueror’s position as the main antagonist for the Multiverse Saga. Downey is deeply invested in shaping Doctor Doom’s background before filming begins, crafting an origin story for the character.
The films featuring McMahon alongside The Fantastic Four received poor reviews, with both parts being heavily criticized. This resulted in a 2015 reboot. Now, the franchise has undergone another overhaul, with an upcoming movie set within the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU). Tentatively titled “The Fantastic Four: First Steps“, it’s slated for release this July. There have been whispers that Downey’s Doctor Doom might make an appearance in a post-credits scene.
Robert Downey Jr., having won an Oscar and known for his versatile acting abilities, is well-equipped to embody a menacing and powerful antagonist within the Marvel universe. It’s intriguing to ponder how he will handle this role, but even more so, we are eager to see Marvel’s approach in presenting Downey as a different character. Previously, some actors have taken on multiple roles within the MCU, yet none have been as prominent as Downey, who served as the face of the franchise for over a decade. The decision to bring back such a notable figure as a villain took many by surprise, sparking curiosity among fans about how Marvel will manage this transition.
Taking a risk, Downey as Doom might just prove to be a huge success if skillfully executed. Though the Russo brothers have experienced some highs and lows after Endgame, their Infinity Saga installments showed an impressive talent for managing multiple storylines and characters effectively. More than anyone else, they grasp the importance of Downey’s comeback, aiming to captivate audiences with the intricate plot of Doomsday. With this strategy, paired with Downey’s innate acting skills, Doom is likely to leave a lasting impression in the upcoming Avengers films.
