Prime Video’s ‘Old Country Bumpkin’ Anime Takes the Streaming World by Storm!

As a devoted fan, I can’t help but notice that Amazon Prime Video has been steadily expanding its anime library season after season. This Spring brought one of the most exhilarating action anime series of the season: “From Rustic Peasant to Master Swordsman“. This latest Prime Video offering is already creating a stir and enjoying great success on the platform.

The series adheres to the traditional weekly release schedule, and with each new episode, the once “Rustic Peasant” character is steadily climbing up Amazon’s streaming charts, outshining other highly-anticipated new shows.

Currently, “Old Country Bumpkin” ranks ninth on Prime Video’s weekly Top 10 list at the time of its release. It surpasses “Overcompensating” in the tenth spot, while being outranked by Prime Video’s popular fantasy series, “The Wheel of Time,” which is placed eighth. The anime adaptation hails from the light novel series by Shigeru Sagazaki, titled “From Old Country Bumpkin to Master Swordsman: My Hotshot Disciples Are All Grown Up Now and They Won’t Leave Me Alone.” Fortunately, Studio Passione opted for a more succinct title for the anime.

In case you haven’t guessed from the title, this series centers around Beryl Gardenant, a veteran fencing coach residing in a tranquil countryside town. Over the years, he has nurtured numerous students who have gained global recognition for their skills. Eventually, one of his former pupils comes back with an intriguing proposition: to serve as the exclusive instructor for the esteemed Knights’ Order. This sets Beryl on a path that brings him face-to-face with several of his old students, all of whom have leveraged their swordsmanship abilities to accomplish remarkable feats within this prestigious order. In simpler terms, the story follows Beryl as he navigates through the Knights’ Order and reconnects with his past students who have excelled in their fencing careers.

A humble martial arts instructor from a small nation receives an invitation from a renowned pupil to serve as their unique mentor within the Knightly Order. This sets him on a hesitant path filled with planned battles, aiming to dispel his own reservations and those of others.

‘Old Country Bumpkin’ Is an Incredible Action Anime

If you haven’t seen “From Old Country Bumpkin,” we suggest setting aside its playful title as it truly delivers on its sword-fighting reputation. The series skillfully combines authentic fencing methods with the exaggerated action and physicality that anime is known for. Studio Passione has handled the adaptation, and they’ve done a fantastic job in bringing to life the thrilling and pulse-pounding battles from the source light novels.

In an unusual twist for action anime, particularly those aimed at the shonen demographic, Old Country Bumpkin stands out due to its mature lead character. Unlike the typical insanely strong high school students often seen in these genres, our protagonist is well into his late 30s. This is an anomaly, as it’s quite uncommon for anime protagonists to be this old. In this case, we have Beryl, who is nearing the age of 50. His age significantly influences the storyline, as he grapples with parental pressure to marry and must adjust his fighting style to leverage his younger opponents’ strength rather than relying solely on physical prowess.

So far, nine installments of the show titled “Old Country Bumpkin” have already been broadcasted. The first season is set to encompass a grand total of twelve episodes, with fresh episodes being made available each week.
