That’s precisely what the upcoming show, “From Old Country Bumpkin to Master Swordsman,” aspires to provide. The third promotional video for the series highlights the extraordinary accomplishments of Beryl Gardinant, a rural master swordsman who’s earned respect within the show’s universe. Playing alongside is the opening theme, “HEROES” by Takanori Nishikawa, a renowned composer known for creating “Resonance” from Soul Eater and “Invoke” for Mobile Suit Gundam SEED under his alias T.M. Revolution. This sneak peek showcases some of the thrilling battles viewers can expect once the series premieres.
From Old Country Bumpkin to Master Swordsman Is a Departure From the Typical Light-Novel-Turned-Anime
From Country Simpleton to Master Swordsman”
The story revolves around Shigeru Sagazaki’s original, ongoing light novel series with Tetsuhiro Nabeshima providing the artwork, titled “From Country Simpleton to Master Swordsman: My Former Disciples Refuse to Leave Me Alone”. The narrative follows Beryl Gardinant, a character who, after retiring to a peaceful rural village, is unexpectedly offered an urban job as a swordsmanship instructor. As the title suggests, his students, once his disciples, persistently bother him. First published online in 2020, Square Enix later picked up the series for publication under their SQEX Novel imprint, where it has since gained popularity.
Currently, the story titled “From Old Country Bumpkin to Master Swordsman” boasts over 7 million copies in circulation, a figure that is expected to rise as the series progresses, and with the upcoming official airing of its anime adaptation. The manga version of this series has also achieved great success, winning the Piccoma Award for manga in 2023 and ranking second in the Tsutaya Comic Awards of the same year.
The anime adaptation is being handled by studios Passione and Hayabusa Film, with Passione known for their work on the recent reboot of “Spice & Wolf” and one of the latest installments of “Higurashi” franchise, “Higurashi: When They Cry – Gou“. Akio Kazumi, a seasoned director in the anime industry with past works such as the anime adaptations of “Ajin” and “Loner Life in Another World“, will be directing this series.
