At 6 years old, Archie Harrison Mountbatten-Windsor is leading a pretty normal life.
For your basic celebrity kid, that is.
He has traveled to and resided in three different continents, and Oprah Winfrey and Rob Lowe are some of his neighbors. He maintains a strategic and well-organized presence on social media platforms. His initial public utterances were made on a podcast, and he has already influenced the creation of a children’s book based on his life.
A book he loved, according to the author, his mom Meghan Markle.
Although Archie has always known life in Southern California since moving there with his parents at just nine months old, it was Prince Harry and Meghan who significantly changed their own lives to bring their family to where they are now, not only physically but also philosophically.
If Archie ever finds himself particularly intrigued about his early years, before he developed memories, we can assure you that they have been thoroughly recorded. However, it’s important to note that the kitchen scene in his mom’s Netflix series With Love, Megan is not actually our family kitchen.
At the Time 100 Summit recently, when someone asked me, “Why didn’t you utilize your house?”, I replied, “Well, my children are due back home for their afternoon rest, and having 80 people in the kitchen isn’t exactly the idyllic memory I wish to create for them.
From the get-go, ensuring that Archie found comfort in tranquil family moments at home rather than getting swept up in bustling paparazzi swarms was my top priority.
On May 6, 2019, at Portland Hospital in London, the baby who would later be known as Baby Sussex was born, just a fortnight before his parents celebrated their first wedding anniversary. He made his first public appearance in news footage when he was merely two days old, being held by his father outside Windsor Castle.
In due course, the identity of this individual will be disclosed, accompanied by an image showing Queen Elizabeth II greeting her seventh great-grandchild. It was believed that Meghan and Harry chose not to bestow their son with a royal title at birth, opting instead for a more ordinary lifestyle over lofty titles.
Meghan expressed her feelings by saying, “Becoming a mom feels like magic to me. It’s absolutely incredible, and I must say, I have the most wonderful men by my side, making me incredibly happy.
Within the privacy of their home at Frogmore Cottage, close to Windsor Castle, life with Archie proved to be a charming experience, as Meghan described it. When presenting her son to the media, she shared that he has an exceptionally gentle disposition. Harry echoed this sentiment, cradling what many perceived as his miniature replica, stating that his appearance evolves on a daily basis.
Up until now, parenting has been an incredible experience for him. He went on to say, “We’ve only had this new role for about two and a half to three days, but the joy we feel in caring for our own little baby is immeasurable. It’s such a privilege to be able to spend these valuable moments with him as he begins his journey of growth.” As they adjusted Archie slightly so the photographers could get a better look, Harry humorously pointed out, “He seems to have inherited a bit of facial hair already!
His first public Dad joke.
On June 4, 2021, Archie gained the title of big brother as his sister Lilibet Diana entered the world at Santa Barbara Cottage Hospital in California. Their family expansion took place much later than the Duke and Duchess of Sussex decided that their role as working royals was no longer suitable for them.
During their September 2019 Africa visit accompanied by five-month-old Archie, journalist Tom Bradby found that a more fitting description for Harry and Meghan than ‘happy’ might be used.
During an unexpectedly candid initial conversation, Meghan discussed the impact of constant media attention on her every action, revealing that it negatively affected both her physical and psychological well-being.
She expressed, “Well, let me tell you, it can be quite difficult for any woman, especially when they’re pregnant, as you become incredibly vulnerable. Add to that the arrival of a newborn, and well, you get the picture.
Asked if it would be fair to say she’d been struggling, she replied, “Yes.”
During the ITV special Harry & Meghan: An African Journey, the conversation took on a deeper tone when Harry confessed that the sight of flashbulbs was inevitably reminiscent for him of his mother, the late Princess Diana. She had been persistently pursued by the media from her debut in the royal family as then-19-year-old fiancée of Prince Charles until her untimely death in 1997.
When Meghan informed Bradby that she dismissed her friends’ concerns about the British tabloids potentially ruining her life due to her involvement with the U.K.’s most sought-after bachelor, her frequent detractors (alongside some fresh ones who disliked being categorized among the persistent offenders) seized the opportunity to elaborate on how she had misstepped as a royal and was negatively influencing Harry in the process.
Though many supporters praised Meghan for openly discussing her experience as a new mother in the spotlight, this marked the start of their struggle to align with the royal work lifestyle.
In early 2020, I, a devoted follower, found myself following Harry and Meghan’s lead as they expressed their intentions to achieve financial independence from the royal family. Their plan also included dividing their time between the U.K. and North America, with the specific location remaining undisclosed at that moment.
Harry made it clear to his friend James Corden during their segment on The Late Late Show that it wasn’t about leaving, but more about taking a step back instead of stepping down. He explained that the situation had become very challenging due to the intense British media, which took a toll on his mental health. They were exploring Los Angeles together, riding a double-decker bus and even failing to appreciate high tea amidst all this.
I realized this wasn’t healthy for us, so just as any caring spouse and parent would, I decided it was time to move our family away from here.
Which most people—some approving, some viciously disapproving—interpreted as stepping down.
His grandmother, father, and brother, known as Prince William, were conscious that Harry was progressively unsettled – however, as per Harry’s 2023 memoir “Spare,” they didn’t fully grasp the reasons behind it – but the couple’s announcement about their departure occurred before all the specifics of their exit had been settled.
2019’s New Year’s Eve found me, Harry, and our little bundle of joy, Archie, tucked away in an expansive waterfront abode on Vancouver Island, Canada – a place that had become my cherished home while filming six seasons of the captivating USA series “Suits”. It was here that Meghan and I spent those precious moments as discussions unfolded between Harry, William, Charles, and Her Majesty herself, delineating the true essence of our temporary separation from the Royal Family. And it’s where Archie remained when Meghan returned to England for her final royal engagements.
It was discovered that there is no concept of part-time. Instead, starting from March 31, 2020, they chose to eliminate the term “royal” from their future ventures, both business and charitable. They retained their positions but could no longer utilize their HRH titles or represent themselves as the Duke and Duchess of Sussex in public affairs.
They had returned to California before the pandemic started and moved into a $14.7 million gated home in Montecito that August, having spent the initial months of quarantine at a house owned by Tyler Perry in Beverly Hills. The Atlanta-based actor and studio head generously provided this space to make their transition into their new lives smoother.
Meghan and Harry additionally founded their charitable group, Archewell, which derives from the Greek term “Arche,” signifying “origin of endeavor.” The name evidently resonated with them, as it shares a resemblance to Archie.
Harry didn’t go back to England until the funeral of his grandfather, Prince Philip, in April 2021. Meghan, who was pregnant with Lilibet and advised against flying, remained at home with their son instead.
Despite Peter Phillips walking between William and Harry during the funeral procession to St. George’s Chapel, it was noticeable that Harry naturally drew closer to William and Kate following the service, which many perceived as a significant improvement in their relationship after several months of strain. This improvement came amidst the royal family’s forceful response to Harry and Meghan’s revealing interview with Oprah.
In the book “Spare“, Harry expressed his hope for a meaningful conversation involving himself, his father, and his brother, one that had been long overdue, regarding all the past events before Harry and Meghan departed. However, as per Harry’s account, neither Charles nor William appeared to find any need for such discussion.
While they were, in contrast to traditional royal practices, all along, he and Meghan were parenting royally but with a different approach, being based on the opposite side of the ocean. They had not granted media access to Archie’s christening and kept his godparents private (it was later disclosed that Perry is one of them).
Instead of sticking to a typical routine for documenting family milestones with regular photos, it appears that they might follow tradition when celebrating significant events like Archie’s first birthday by releasing a special video, but their approach to scheduling is more flexible.
During lockdown, their plans are to keep Archie out of the spotlight even after it ends, a source revealed to royal biographer Katie Nicholl. They aim for him to enjoy an ordinary life free from cameras.
His public image wasn’t just happening spontaneously. A prime example: the idyllic portrayal of their family on their 2020 Christmas card, followed by his first spoken words in the debut (and final) episode of their Spotify podcast Archewell Audio, where Meghan asked her son, “Archie, is it fun?” This suggests that even these moments were thoughtfully arranged.
“Fun?” he echoed.
According to Harry, Archie’s very first spoken word was “crocodile.” Given this, it seems logical that Harry should have discussed reptiles, considering how early and advanced his vocabulary appears to be, as evidenced by him putting together three to four words and even singing songs.
The young child was quite familiar with breakfast meals, as Harry put it, “Meg prepares an appealing organic blend, using the waffle maker, flip it over, and out comes the waffle. He adores it. Now I too have waffles for breakfast, a bit of yogurt, a touch of jam (I’m not sure if that’s appropriate), perhaps some berries, a drizzle of honey, maybe some syrup. In the mornings, Archie simply asks, ‘Waffle?’
Overall, his son was “hysterical,” with “the most amazing personality.”
During a conversation with members from the Rugby Football League, Harry expressed that it was difficult for him to find miniature rugby balls, yet he remained optimistic about his son becoming a fan of the sport, as it’s particularly well-liked in Britain and Australia. “However, I want him to start playing Rugby League.
While Lili was en route, Harry expressed to Oprah that they had formed their family, consisting of the four of them and their pair of dogs, which was wonderful.
He was incredibly thankful, almost to the point of being speechless, just to have any child at all. A single child, or even two, would have been an incredible blessing. But to be blessed with a son followed by a daughter, it’s hard to imagine anything better.
Delightfully bittersweet, their children have been granted titles and are recognized as Prince Archie of Sussex and Princess Lilibet of Sussex on the official royal family website. They now hold the positions of sixth and seventh in line to the throne following the passing of their great-grandmother Queen Elizabeth II on September 8, 2022. This change occurred because they are now grandchildren of the current monarch, King Charles III.
Children in such circumstances are typically given titles, unless their parents explicitly opt out. For instance, Princess Anne, Charles’ sister, chose not to give titles to her children Peter and Zara Tindall (née Phillips) upon their births.
However, the quiet advancements of Archie and Lilibet within the royal family didn’t prompt Harry and Meghan to become any more inclined to cease their existing actions. Instead, they persisted in stirring things up further.
The widely popular Netflix documentary series titled “Harry & Meghan” (released in November 2022) presented their perspective on how the rift between Prince Harry and other members of his immediate family developed, showcasing a variety of family photographs and home videos along the way.
Subsequently, in January, Spare emerged, and it was revealed that Harry’s rift with his brother remained unhealed during the time he left the U.K., extending over two years. His reunion with William and Kate Middleton for the rituals of mourning the late queen occurred later on.
In a recent interview with People, coinciding with the publication of his book, he mentioned that he had previously expressed a desire for a family, not just any institution. Consequently, it goes without saying that he would be overjoyed if our children could build connections with members of his family. Fortunately, this is happening with some, which brings him immense pleasure.
It was no shock that Harry traveled alone to England for his father’s coronation on May 6, 2023, and immediately returned to California to celebrate Archie’s fourth birthday. On the same day, a bicycle store run by a British friend near their home in Montecito, CA, gifted the youngest prince with new bicycles for the special occasion.
Although Harry and Meghan have openly shared their personal sentiments, such as Harry stating he is still distant from the royal family, they are keeping their parenting very private.
He informed “Good Morning America” on February 16, 2024, that his children are thriving well. During a brief trip to the U.K., he checked in on his father who was recently diagnosed with cancer, and shared this update about his family’s life. He added, “Just like all kids, they’re growing up at an astonishing pace.
Harry remarked, “Both of them possess an amazing sense of humor that consistently makes us laugh and keeps us rooted. It’s as if they bring the childlike joy we associate with kids into our lives every day. Honestly, I’m incredibly thankful for being their dad.
Despite maintaining a private life, Harry and Meghan have occasionally released photographs of their children Archie and Lili.
Meghan and Princess Lilibet enjoyed some time in the garden in April 2025.
Prince Archie also enjoyed examining the roses in a garden in April 2025.
Harry and Princess Lilibet shared a sweet moment on a boat ride in March 2025.
Prince Archie enjoyed the holiday celebration with fresh strawberries to boot.
Princess Lilibet played a game with her mom’s friend in early 2025.
On New Year’s Eve, the Duke and Duchess of Sussex shared this picture as part of their “Year in Review 2019” video on Instagram.
In 2019, while on a royal visit to South Africa, the couple introduced Archie (who was 3 months old at the time) and had an encounter with Archbishop Desmond Tutu.
Meghan was seen reading the book Duck! Rabbit!” to Archie on his first birthday, May 6, 2021.
Meghan and Harry introduced their newly-born child, previously called Archie Harrison Mountbatten-Windsor, to the public in St George’s Hall within Windsor Castle, Windsor, England, during May of 2021.
