Prince Harry gave a royally moving speech at the 2024 ESPY Awards.
At the Dolby Theatre in Los Angeles on July 11, the Duke of Sussex made an appearance to receive the Pat Tillman Award for Service. In his speech, he paid tribute to the strong connection between a mother and her son as he addressed Mary Tillman, the proud mom of the football player for whom the accolade was named. Harry, accompanied by Meghan Markle at the event, expressed his heartfelt support for Pat’s legacy with deep-rooted respect. The connection between a mother and son endures forever, surmounting even the most profound losses.
The 39-year-old man, whose mother, Princess Diana, tragically passed away in a car accident in 1997, went on to say, “I speak here not just as Prince Harry, recipient of the Pat Tillman Award, but also as a representative for the Invictus Games Foundation and the countless veterans and service members from more than twenty countries who have worked tirelessly to bring about the Invictus Games.”
Harry added, “This award belongs to them, not to me.”
Annually, the ESPYS honor an individual who possesses a profound link to sports and has selflessly given back to their community, emulating the altruistic spirit of the late NFL star and Army Ranger, Pat Tillman.
When introducing Harry, the father of Archie Harrison, age 5, and Lilibet Diana, age 3, during the announcement in June, ESPN highlighted his contributions to the veteran community, which have brought about significant positivity.
Following a decade of commitment to the British military, which involved two stints in Afghanistan as a forward air controller and helicopter pilot with the Apache squadron, Prince Harry established The Invictus Games Foundation. Through this organization, he continues his dedication by providing an international arena where wounded, injured, and ill servicemen and women, both active-duty personnel and veterans, can overcome physical and mental challenges.
At the 2024 ESPYS, which will be hosted by Serena Williams, Steve Gleason, a former NFL safety, and Dawn Staley are among the honorees. Steve will receive the Arthur Ashe Award for Courage, while Dawn will be awarded the Jimmy V Award for Perseverance.
“Kate Jackson of ESPN expressed gratitude in a June statement, highlighting three remarkable individuals: “It’s an honor for us to acknowledge these exceptional people.” These award recipients have harnessed their influence to foster change and create a more welcoming world for underrepresented and disadvantaged populations. Their determination, optimism, and tenacity are truly inspiring, and we’re excited to pay tribute to them at The 2024 ESPYS Awards.”
