As a dedicated fan of the Nelson family, I find myself deeply saddened by the loss of Tyka Nelson, Prince’s beloved sister and a talented musician in her own right. Her spirit and her music will forever be etched in our hearts.
Prince’s family is mourning a great loss.
TopMob News reported that the representative of the Prince estate verified the death on November 4th of Tyka Nelson, the late singer’s sibling and a talented musician in her own career, at the age of 64.
As a dedicated admirer, I’m deeply grieved to learn about Tyka Nelson’s departure from our world. Primary Wave expressed their sympathy in a statement on the 5th of November, extending their condolences to her sons, President Nelson and Sir Nelson. She was renowned for her exceptional singing and songwriting skills, and as Prince’s sister, she stood by him and tirelessly worked to preserve his legacy. My thoughts are with President, Sir, and her family during this challenging period.
Initially, Tyka’s son revealed the news to The Minnesota Star Tribune. The publication reported that while confirming Tyka’s passing, the president refrained from providing additional information.
Tyka was born in 1960 to jazz musician John L. Nelson and singer Mattie Della Shaw. For most part of her life, she resided in Minneapolis, Minnesota, which is nearby the location of Prince’s Paisley Park estate and museum.
Despite her older brother, Prince (originally named Prince Rogers Nelson), achieving significant musical success, she too was a successful artist, producing four albums during her lifetime. Notably, she experienced success with her 1988 song “Marc Anthony’s Tune.” In more recent times, she has chosen to retreat from live performances, with her last concert happening in Australia in 2018.
“She had her own mind,” her sister Sharon Nelson, told the Tribune. “She’s in a better place.”
In her acceptance speech, Tyka praised her late brother’s contribution to music.
The speaker remembered Prince, who, against all expectations, was a young Black man from Minneapolis with an ambitious dream to captivate the globe. He had the bravery to be unique. His innovative ideas and God-granted abilities have kept him one of the world’s most esteemed and adored artists.
Tyka is also survived her sister Norrine Nelson and brother Omarr Baker.
Over time, she revealed her relationship with her late brother Prince. Following the tragic passing of the “Purple Rain” singer in 2016 at age 57, Tyka notably accepted his American Music Award for Favorite Soundtrack, addressing him as “our amazing friend, mentor, and sibling.
Tyka got emotional during her acceptance, declaring, “Until we see you again, this is for you.”
Apart from revealing other details, she disclosed what Prince envisioned as his lasting impact. “However, he expressed to me that he aspired to be recognized as the most productive songwriter globally,” she mentioned. “And with 984 songs under his belt, and still growing, he has certainly achieved this status. In Prince’s own words, ‘With affection, reverence, and recognition for every life in the cosmos, division vanishes, and we become one voice harmonizing one tune.’
