Princess Tiana’s Animatronic Breakdown: Disneyland’s Diverse DEI Disaster Takes Another Hit!

At Disneyland, Tiana’s Bayou Adventure has been facing yet another significant problem. For over a month now, the final animatronic figure of Princess Tiana has remained out of service.

Disneyland’s latest offering, Tiana’s Bayou Adventure, has encountered another problem, exacerbating concerns from visitors. The final Audio-Animatronic of Princess Tiana, showcased in the climactic scene, hasn’t been working for more than a month. Placed on the porch of her New Orleans home along with her group of critters (and let’s not forget Taveen), this animatronic of Tiana was intended to perform and move rhythmically to the attraction’s theme song, “Special Spice.

Instead, she now stands rigid, with stiff arms and limited facial movement.

It appears that the robot has been stuck in a frozen state since at least December 13, 2024. Even though her eyes and mouth seem to move, the absence of smooth, realistic movements has left several visitors feeling let down. Upon examination on January 14, 2025, there were no indications that things had improved.

It’s challenging to determine the specific problems that Tiana’s Bayou Adventure is experiencing, but likely it involves both technical aspects (ride system) and the overall performance of the show.

Since its soft opening last autumn and official debut at Disneyland on November 15, 2024, the technical issue with Tiana’s Bayou Adventure has been one of several problems that have arisen. This ride, which took over from the beloved Splash Mountain, has faced criticism for regular breakdowns and emergency guest exits across both coasts. Similar issues have also been reported at Walt Disney World’s Magic Kingdom, where the attraction has been operational since June 28, 2024.

Enthusiasts of Disney themes parks have expressed strong disappointment over the removal of Splash Mountain, a classic ride that many cherish for its exhilarating drops and emotional bond to Disney’s golden era of creativity and innovation.

The shutdown of Splash Mountain was initiated after Disney’s Stories Matter team decided that the ride’s link to the film Song of the South was problematic due to its potentially offensive racial themes. They plan to transform the ride into Tiana’s Bayou Adventure, positioning it as an attempt to enhance diversity and inclusivity. However, some critics contend that the new version falls short compared to the original.

Instead of just technical glitches, the new attraction hasn’t managed to captivate visitors as much as its predecessor, Splash Mountain. While Splash Mountain was a top priority for many theme park enthusiasts, Tiana’s Bayou Adventure hasn’t garnered the same level of acclaim, causing some to question if shutting down Splash Mountain was beneficial. The mechanical problems serve as another indication of a project that has encountered challenges throughout its development and execution process.

The department at Disney known as The Stories Matter, which oversees reevaluations of their attractions, has faced criticism for making similar changes. Among their actions were modifying rides like Peter Pan’s Flight and The Country Bear Jamboree, and adding content warnings to classic Disney+ titles such as Dumbo and Peter Pan. Many fans of Disney’s parks and movies have voiced displeasure over what they perceive as unwarranted tampering with cherished experiences, allegedly done in the name of addressing contemporary concerns.

Although Disney hasn’t commented on the ongoing issue with the animatronics, the recurring technical problems are adding fuel to the fire, suggesting that the company may have prioritized appearance over providing a dependable, long-lasting attraction. At present, Princess Tiana stands frozen in place, reflective of a deeper battle within Disney as they strive to harmonize nostalgia, identity politics, and contemporary storytelling.
