Project G.G. in Question After Senior PlatinumGames Developers Depart

It’s been debated whether the departure of Hideki Kamiya, creator of Bayonetta and former vice president of PlatinumGames, might have influenced his recent work with the studio. Kamiya is currently directing the Ōkami sequel under his new independent studio CLOVERS Inc., which made his involvement in Project G.G., a highly anticipated project, uncertain. However, Kamiya has recently disclosed some concerning news about several key Platinum developers leaving the company, potentially causing issues for the secret superhero project.

It appears that the status of Project G.G remains uncertain, as it has been removed from PlatinumGames’ list of projects on their website. This action also includes the removal of pages for Mad World, Sol Cresta, Babylon’s Fall, and World of Demons. The former link for Project G.G now redirects viewers to the Platinum homepage. In a December interview with VGC, Hideki Kamiya mentioned an Ultraman-inspired project that he regretted not being able to complete. Although there is a slim chance that Platinum may continue working on the game, its absence from the website does not offer any optimism, even if a superhero is involved.

Based on Kamiya’s recent YouTube video, it appears that the director may have revealed that some prominent game developers have left the company. It’s rumored that a few of these departures were in response to Kamiya’s exit in October 2023. Towards the end of the video, there was an extra segment featuring footage from a gathering of former PlatinumGames directors having drinks together. In attendance at this party were Yusuke Miyata, director of Bayonetta 3, Abebe Tinari, director of Bayonetta Origins, Kenji Saito, director of Metal Gear Rising, Takahisa Taura, director of Astral Chain, and Masaki Yamanaka, designer for Anarchy Reigns and Resident Evil.

Previously, it was confirmed that Tinari was leaving the company a month ago; however, the status of other ex-developers such as Taura, Saito, Miyaya, and Yamanaka has yet to be addressed. These individuals were involved in more recent Bayonetta titles like 2022’s “Bayonetta 3” and the upcoming 2023 release, “Bayonetta Origins”. This development raises concerns about the future of the Bayonetta series since three former directors associated with it have departed from the company. There are hints that Taura may be planning to establish his own studio following the success of “Astral Chain”.

Regarding the other ex-developers, Kamiya mentioned that “They’ll undoubtedly produce unique creations, as only they can.” Since their whereabouts in the gaming sector remain unclear, it’s possible that a few of them have joined forces with Kamiya at CLOVERS Inc.

Kamiya’s journey with Platinum Games has been challenging due to his departure from the studio as creator of The Wonderful 101, which was confirmed in an interview with DenFamiNicoGamer last December. He revealed that he had a non-compete clause that kept him unemployed for a year following his exit. Moreover, Kamiya expressed disagreements with Platinum Games CEO Atsushi Inaba regarding the company’s overall direction. However, despite their strained relationship, there is a possibility of Kamiya collaborating with Platinum Games in the future alongside CLOVERS Inc.

As a devoted fan, I can’t help but feel a pang of concern seeing Project G.G. vanish from PlatinumGames’ official website and some prominent team members part ways with the company. The prospect of this anticipated superhero game materializing seems uncertain at the moment. However, hearing that Hideki Kamiya remains open to collaboration offers a flicker of optimism for the future. Regrettably, it appears our superhero savior won’t be making a swift appearance on the scene just yet.
