As a proud alumna of Team USA and a five-time Olympic medalist, I can confidently say that watching this year’s Games from the sidelines was nothing short of surreal. It felt like just yesterday I was standing on that podium, basking in the glory of my golden moment.
Nastia Liukin traded in her spot on the podium for a seat in the stands at the 2024 Paris Olympics.
16 years after winning five medals, including a gold in the individual all-around, at the 2008 Beijing Games, the retired artistic gymnast rejoiced as the new Team USA athletes competed. Although she didn’t bring her leotard, she made sure to take along her team spirit.
In essence, since she was once part of Team USA, Nastia became an honored member of a unique group, and this connection endures far beyond the competitions.
As a die-hard fan, I can’t help but feel that they’ve become an integral part of my extended family, bound by a shared admiration and esteem for their journey. Their success isn’t lost on me; I know the effort and dedication required to reach their heights. It’s been years since we first met, yet it feels as if no time has passed at all. The sport and the Olympics have gifted me these incredible sisters, and I cherish them just as dearly today, standing by them as an older sister would.
After equaling Mary Lou Retton’s five-medal record for a U.S. gymnast in 2008 at age 34, Nastia desired to impart her older sister insights to the 2024 U.S. women’s gymnastics team.
Her main piece of advice was for the gymnasts to aim at staying focused on the present and living in the current moment, which she conveyed to TopMob News in March. She emphasized that time passes rapidly.
She demonstrated her actions matched her words while under the public eye, as evidenced by her maintaining a diary throughout the Summer Olympics held in Beijing.
“I wrote in it every single day,” she noted, “and I have that for the rest of my life.”
However, when she publicly cheered for Simone Biles, Suni Lee, Jade Carey, Hezly Rivera, and Jordan Chiles as they competed in Paris, she was aware that their exceptional skills wouldn’t shield them from the mental challenges that often come with participating in the Olympic games.
“They are really well-trained,” Nastia told TopMob. “If anything, it’s more so a mental challenge.”
“If you manage to be your authentic self and remain true to who you are, that’s what truly matters,” she emphasized.

The retired artistic gymnast, Nastia Liukin (who won the all-round title at the 2008 Olympic Games in Beijing), made her way to Paris to support Team USA.
And on the day before the Opening Ceremony, she got ready for a night to remember with Vogue.
Nastia concluded an enchanting evening by appearing on Vogue for their Pre-Olympics celebration, dressed elegantly in a dazzling golden dress.
In Paris, during his stay, the gold medalist took time to speak with NBC Sports anchor Maria Taylor for her nightly broadcast about the 2024 Olympics.
Five-time Olympic medalist teamed up with psychologist Dr. Michael Gervais to debut the podcast “Exploring the Minds of Athletes at the Olympics: Insights from Dr. Mike Gervais.” This podcast delves into the psychological aspects of athletes competing in the Olympic Games.
To show her commitment to being among Team USA’s biggest fans, Nastia hosted events at Team USA House, which was a hub in the historic Palais Brongniart that was devoted to cheering on and celebrating the athletes.
Nastia seized each chance to savor her moments under the enchanting Parisian lamps, informing TopMob News, “I made it a point to gaze upon the Eiffel Tower at least once every day.”
Nastia bumped into her old buddy and ex-teammate, Shawn Johnson, at Ralph’s supermarket!
This time around, Nastia watched the gymnastics all-around final from the stands.
As a die-hard supporter, I can’t help but echo the wisdom shared by our champion: “Strive to stay focused on the here and now, immerse yourself in each moment,” she gracefully imparted to TopMob News in March. “The time flies by so swiftly.”
