As a dedicated gamer, I’ve witnessed numerous attempts at bringing the thrilling world of Resident Evil to life on the silver screen. Among all these efforts, the series directed by Paul W.S. Anderson, featuring the captivating performance of Milla Jovovich, has undeniably been the most successful in my eyes.
Currently, it’s reported that there’s an intense competition among studios for the rights to a franchise revival, with Zach Cregger, popularly known for his work on “Barbarian,” at the helm.
Based on information from the site, it appears that both Warner Bros and Netflix are potential candidates for acquiring the upcoming movie. This film is planned to be jointly penned by Shay Hatten, who worked on John Wick: Chapter 4. Cregger is slated to contribute as a co-writer and director for this project.
Constantly Film, who owns the rights for the TV show, seems set to collaborate with PS Productions in making it. This could be the initial instance where Constantin Film participates in adapting a series that they don’t entirely own, since although Resident Evil has been associated with PlayStation for quite some time, Capcom is the one who created the franchise and continues to develop the games.
According to reports, Cregger’s interpretation seems to stay truer to the source titles, similar to what was claimed for the 2021 movie “Resident Evil: Welcome to Raccoon City,” but unlike that film, it didn’t fare well in terms of critical acclaim and box office performance.
Despite earning a global box office total of approximately $1.2 billion from the Resident Evil movies, it’s not hard to understand why a fierce competition among studios (a bidding war) might arise for the next installment. Let’s wait and see where this new take on the series will lead us.
