PS1 3D Platformer Getting Surprise Remaster This Year

As a seasoned gamer with memories as deep as the pixelated oceans of Super Mario 64, I can hardly contain my excitement for the return of Croc: Legend of the Gobbos! The year 1997 was a golden era in gaming history, and Croc was a shining star amidst the constellation of classics that graced our screens.

A PS1 and Sega Saturn 3D platformer classic from yesteryear is back with a surprise remaster. 1997 is often considered by many as one of the all time great years in gaming history. Series such as Grand Theft Auto, Fallout, Gran Turismo, and Diablo all got their starts during the late 90s year. Meanwhile, the likes of Final Fantasy 7, GoldenEye 007, Castlevania: Symphony of the Night, Star Fox 64, Quake II, Crash Bandicoot 2, and more all released. This was also around the time of the birth of the 3D platformer.

26 years ago, in 1996, Nintendo unveiled “Super Mario 64”. Subsequently, studio Argonaut Software (famous for “Star Fox”), which ceased operations in 2004, presented a proposal to Nintendo for a 3D platformer starring Yoshi. However, Nintendo declined the idea. Instead of abandoning the project, Argonaut Software reformulated their pitch into the beloved game, “Croc: Legend of the Gobbos”. Now, 27 years later, a remastered version of this game is set to launch. Remarkably, it will be available not only on PC but also on all current gaming consoles. Furthermore, Argonaut Software, now known as Argonaut Games, has resurfaced and revealed that the “Croc: Legend of the Gobbos” remaster is merely the start of a series of projects they have in development, which encompass both new games and reimaginings of their classic titles from the past.

In a recent announcement for the remaster of Croc: Legend of the Gobbos, originally released by Argonaut in 1997, the game’s official pitch highlights the story of Croc, a friendly crocodile on a mission to save the Gobbos from the grasp of the wicked Baron Dante. The game’s endearing qualities and inventiveness earned it immediate classic status, and the remastered version aims to introduce this cherished title to contemporary gamers with upgraded high-definition graphics, refined control mechanisms for modern gaming, and a delightful, nostalgic experience that will rekindle players’ passion for video games, reminding them of what initially drew them into the world of gaming.

Furthermore, enthusiasts of classic gaming should take note: The revamped version also features Crocipedia, a comprehensive and carefully compiled digital archive that includes rare development materials like design documents, concept sketches, animation trials, interviews with team members, and numerous other intriguing artifacts.

At present, we don’t have any specific information about the release date other than it being in 2024 or later. Regarding the price, as of now, there isn’t any confirmed figure, but given the cost range of comparable past projects, it’s likely to be priced between $10 and $30. This is merely an educated guess though.
