The original and subsequent games from the PlayStation 1 Role-Playing Game series have been confirmed as launch titles for Nintendo Switch 2. This means that they will be accessible on the Nintendo Switch 2’s digital storefront as soon as the new Nintendo console hits the market on June 5. Interestingly, the first game in the series was initially released in North America in 1996, even though it had been launched a year prior in Japan. Its sequel came out in 1999, but like its predecessor, it actually made its debut in Japan a year earlier, specifically in 1998.
The games in question are Suikoden and its follow-up, Suikoden II, both originating from Konami. It’s not the original 90s editions that have been verified for Nintendo Switch 2, but rather a recent upgrade of these two games – Suikoden I & II HD Remaster: Gate Rune and Dunan Unification Wars, which dropped on March 5 this year, receiving an 81 rating on Metacritic.
If you’re not already aware, this remastered version boasts enhanced visuals with fresh graphic filters, revamped character designs by the original artist, upgraded audio elements, and innovative additions like a conversation log, automatic battle mode, and faster paced combat at twice the speed.
Originally, Suikoden was a role-playing game that launched the series bearing the same name around 1995 or 1996. Back then, it earned an 82 rating on GameRankings. Despite being successful enough to start a franchise, it was quite niche even during its peak popularity in the ’90s. In today’s era, the series is even more obscure.
Regarding Suikoden II, it received the same overall review score and subsequently had a sequel, Suikoden III, which was launched for the PlayStation 2 in 2002. However, it’s important to note that this third game isn’t part of the current collection.
The remastered versions of Suikoden I & II: Gate Rune and Dunan Unification Wars are now playable on the Nintendo Switch, leading many to speculate that it could potentially arrive on the rumored Nintendo Switch 2. However, specific details about any potential differences between the current and future versions have yet to be revealed.
