Originally released on PlayStation 2 back in 2002, a well-loved action game is planning to make its comeback towards the end of this year with an enhanced version. Although the PS2 was relatively new in 2002, it turned out to be a remarkable year for the console, with numerous hit games being launched. Some of these titles included Grand Theft Auto: Vice City, Madden NFL 2003, Tony Hawk’s Pro Skater 4, TimeSplitters 2, Need for Speed: Hot Pursuit 2, Ratchet & Clank, Sly Cooper and the Thievius Raccoonus, Virtua Fighter 4, Suikoden 3, and many more. Now, a game from Capcom that was released on PS2 during this period is scheduled to return sometime in 2025.
During a recent live broadcast from Capcom, they unveiled their plans to enhance the classic game, Onimusha 2: Samurai’s Destiny. This sequel to Onimusha: Warlords was highly appreciated when it debuted on PlayStation 2 in 2002. Now, Capcom is redeveloping this title for PlayStation 4, Xbox One, Nintendo Switch, and PC, though a precise launch date in 2025 remains unannounced as of now.
Capcom’s decision to revive Onimusha 2 as a remastered game is part of their broader strategy to rejuvenate the Onimusha series, which hasn’t been active since 2006. In 2019, they released a remastered version of Onimusha: Warlords on modern platforms, hoping to rekindle interest in the franchise. The remaster was well-received, leading not only to this remaster of Onimusha 2: Samurai’s Destiny, but also a new game titled Onimusha: Way of the Sword, set for release in 2026.
Looking ahead, it’s intriguing to speculate whether Capcom will revisit more PlayStation 2 (PS2) classics from their past. They’ve already taken steps in this direction with the remakes and upgrades of games from the Resident Evil and Devil May Cry series in recent times. However, there are other titles like Viewtiful Joe, Maximo, and God Hand that have yet to escape their roots on older consoles. Here’s hoping that as time progresses, we’ll witness Capcom revisiting its PS2 library more frequently, making these games more conveniently playable on modern gaming systems.
