PS4 Consoles Get Surprising New Firmware Update From Sony

Today, Sony has rolled out a new software upgrade for both the PS4 and PS4 Pro gaming consoles. Given that the PlayStation 4 is now more than a decade old, Sony has mostly ceased providing updates for its previous-generation hardware. Instead, their main emphasis in recent times has been on the PlayStation 5 and its associated games. Although this trend isn’t likely to shift anytime soon, Sony has seen fit to enhance one feature of the PS4 with today’s latest firmware update.

Immediately available for download, the latest PS4 update (version 12.02) has been rolled out to all users. This marks the first significant update for the PS4 since September 2024 when firmware version 12.00 was released. Similar to its predecessor, this new update primarily focuses on enhancing security within the last-generation PlayStation console system.

Here are the patch notes in full for PS4 update version 12.02:

  • We’ve made some security fixes to the system software.

With the PS4 being quite old now, it’s not expected that significant updates for the console will be forthcoming. However, since many gamers are still actively using the PS4, Sony is likely to provide more minor updates to fix hardware issues like the one released today. While these updates may eventually stop, it’s unlikely they’ll cease by 2025.

It appears that Sony is gradually phasing out support for the PlayStation 4 (PS4) as indicated by recent developments, such as the announcement that the PlayStation Plus service will no longer regularly provide free PS4 games starting January 2026. While PS4 games may still occasionally be added to the service after this date, Sony has made it clear that they won’t be a top priority moving forward. If you haven’t already upgraded from PS4 to PS5, you might want to consider doing so in the near future.
