PS4’s Swan Song: PS Plus Pivots to PS5, Marking the End of an Era!

Is it possible that we’re nearing the twilight for the PlayStation 4? Sony Interactive Entertainment’s last console, which has been a mainstay for more than ten years, continues to be popular even with the triumph of the PlayStation 5. Given the recent announcement of the PS Plus February Monthly Games – Payday 3, High on Life, and Pac-Man World Re-Pac – it appears that the cherished eighth-generation model is gradually fading from view as the PS5 assumes the roles once held by its predecessor.

Starting from 2026, Sony plans to expand the library of PS5 games available to PlayStation Plus subscribers who still own a PlayStation 4. Since its debut in 2020, the service has balanced offering games for both the PS4 and PS5, ensuring each console receives adequate attention. With four years already passed since the launch of the PlayStation 5, the PS4 is now approaching its twelfth year – significantly surpassing the typical lifespan of a video game console which ranges from 6 to 10 years. This indicates that Sony and PlayStation have made a concerted effort to keep the PS4 relevant for an extended period.

PlayStation Plus Will Focus on PS5 Titles in 2026

Today, I’m excited to share some exciting news from the horse’s mouth, so to speak. In a recent blog post on PlayStation, our Game Services Director, Adam Michel, dropped a bombshell about the future of PS4 games for PlayStation Plus members like us gamers.

Starting from January 2026, the focus of PlayStation Plus is set to change, concentrating more on providing PS5 games through the Monthly Games and Game Catalog benefit. While we’ll still offer some PS4 games, they won’t be a primary feature. Instead, you can expect them to appear occasionally in the Monthly Games and Game Catalog from January 2026. However, we will continue to provide games that can be played on both PS4 and PS5 consoles after this date.

The discussion further explores the methodology behind implementing this change. For PS Plus members, previously claimed games will remain accessible, and PS4 titles will continue to be playable even after they are removed from the monthly rotation. If a game is or becomes available on both PS4 and PS5, players can still redeem both versions. Since PS4 games will no longer be the primary focus, it could potentially open up opportunities for popular PS5 games to join the subscription service.

Michel additionally mentions that they plan to enhance and refine the PlayStation Plus experience, offering you improved benefits such as special discounts, online multiplayer access, cloud game save storage, and much more. As we transition our attention towards the PS5, we’re excited about regularly providing new PS5 games for your entertainment.

The change in focus suggests that the discussion about the PS4 may be dwindling. However, numerous upcoming games could potentially appear on the PS Plus service and PlayStation 4 throughout 2025. Whether the PS4 will continue to garner attention in 2026 remains uncertain.
