PS5 Fans Upset After PlayStation Puts Ads With Games

As a long-time PlayStation fan who has witnessed the evolution of gaming consoles from the original PlayStation to the latest PS5, I must say I find myself disheartened by the recent turn of events. The addition of ads on the PS5 dashboard is something that I had hoped would never come to pass, considering the relatively ad-free experience we’ve enjoyed so far compared to our Xbox counterparts.

PlayStation users are expressing discontent following a new PS5 update that introduces ads featuring games, which had previously been absent from their gaming experience. In contrast, Xbox Series X and S users have long complained about Microsoft’s heavy use of advertisements on the dashboard, often finding these ads intrusive and impossible to ignore or remove. Recently, these ads have become more frequent, even taking over the entire screen upon console startup. Until now, PlayStation fans had been spared from this issue, but it seems that may soon change.

This month, Sony released an update for the PS5, featuring a revamped interface they’ve named “Welcome Hub,” similar to an upgraded dashboard. At first, users could opt to eliminate all promotional widgets on the console, creating a more personalized experience without constant advertising from Sony and its partners trying to sell products.

Ever since the update on my PlayStation 5, I’ve found myself encountering an increased number of ads on the dashboard – something that long-time PS5 users like me haven’t been accustomed to. Whether this is a deliberate move or simply a glitch, it’s hard to say for certain at the moment. However, considering the smooth operation of the system prior to the update, it seems more likely that this could be an intentional change.

It appears that PlayStation 5 users have been noticing an update where certain games on their dashboard now play advertisements in the background. Interestingly, these ads cannot be turned off, and it seems that this new feature is only affecting specific titles. However, some players report no changes at all. Here are a few examples of the alteration, kindly shared by user Alfredobofa:

“Picture yourself as a new user of PS5 this holiday season, transitioning from your old PS4 themes to these. This drastic decline in quality deserves attention and analysis.

Some PlayStation enthusiasts speculate that this phenomenon is triggered when users select games with “official updates” associated with them, as it might explain why not all PS5 titles exhibit this behavior. Yet, this theory remains unverified at this point.

Currently, Sony (PlayStation) hasn’t provided any comments regarding this issue or the growing controversy. At present, it seems unlikely that they will offer any comment, but should that change, we will promptly update our report.
