Neil Druckmann, head of Naughty Dog studio, and Alex Garland, writer of 28 Days Later, recently engaged in a discussion as part of Sony’s Creator to Creator series. This nearly hour-long conversation encompassed various aspects of their careers, storytelling techniques, and creative methodologies. It offers a captivating peek into the minds of two creative leaders. Additionally, Neil Druckmann shared some details about Naughty Dog’s upcoming PS5 project, Intergalactic: The Heretic Prophet.
In this game, set 2000 years in the future, the storyline diverges from our present timeline around the late 1980s. Druckmann notes, “We created The Last of Us Part II with some creative choices that earned us a lot of criticism. While many people adore it, many others hate that game.” Garland remarks casually, “Who cares?” To which Druckmann replies, “Precisely. So the humor lies in ‘let’s do something that won’t bother people as much. Let’s make a game centered around beliefs and religion.’
During the development process, Naughty Dog dedicated considerable effort to constructing the religion of the distant planet Sempiria, which has been silent and inactive for six centuries. The protagonist, Jordan, unexpectedly crash-lands on this planet while pursuing a bounty, finding himself stranded and needing to discover the planet’s past – all by himself.
In contrast to past Naughty Dog productions such as The Last of Us and Uncharted, which frequently feature a companion, this game is designed to explore the theme of solitude. As Druckmann notes, “Many of our previous games have always had an ally with you, and there’s constant dialogue. This new one should be lost in a place where you’re unsure about its history, who inhabited it, and what happened here.
Regarding the potential release date of the game, Druckmann expresses that there’s still some distance to cover, and he himself isn’t certain about its final appearance. He has a guess, but the project is continuously developing and adapting.
