PS5 is the Best-Selling Console in the US for August, Xbox Series X/S in 2nd

As a longtime gaming enthusiast who has witnessed the evolution of consoles since the Atari 2600 days, I find it fascinating to see how the market is constantly shifting. Despite the 36% drop in hardware spending this August compared to last year, it’s reassuring to see the PS5 maintaining its leading position, much like a reliable old friend standing strong amidst changes.

In August 2024, expenditure on video games in the U.S. was just 7% lower compared to the same time last year, according to Circana. But a notable decrease of 36% has been seen in hardware spending, totaling approximately $208 million, as reported by analyst and executive director Mat Piscatella.

Despite experiencing a substantial 41% decrease in sales compared to last year (probably because its successor is imminent), other current-generation consoles also saw drops of at least 34%. However, the PlayStation 5 currently dominates both unit and revenue sales for August. The Xbox Series X/S comes in second place. It remains to be seen whether the launch of the rumored PS5 Pro in November will significantly alter spending patterns on gaming hardware.

The expenditure on accessories totaled $173 million, marking a 3% decrease from the previous year. The spending on gamepads declined by 10%, and the PS5 DualSense Wireless Controller in Midnight Black led in sales among all accessories. Interestingly, the Remote Play Device segment showed an increase, with the PlayStation Portal being the top-selling accessory for the entire year.

In simpler terms, spending on video game hardware in August decreased significantly, dropping approximately 36% from what was spent last year, amounting to $208 million. All current console platforms experienced a decline of at least 34%, with Nintendo Switch seeing the most substantial decrease (-41%) compared to the same timeframe last year.

As a gamer, I’m back on my PlayStation 5 this month, leading the hardware market in terms of both units and dollars sold. The Xbox Series Squared is giving me some competition, but it’s still playing catch-up in both categories.

Consumer spending on Accessories in August fell 3% when compared to a year ago, to $173M. Growth in the Remote Play Device segment (PlayStation Portal), was offset by a 10% year-on-year decline in Gamepad spending.

In August, the Midnight Black version of the PS5 DualSense Wireless Controller emerged as the top-selling accessory in terms of dollar sales, whereas, by the midpoint of 2024, PlayStation Portal has consistently been the highest-selling item.
