On February 25th, 2025, Spectre Divide – a PS5 game resembling Valorant in a 3v3 format that operates as a live-service – was launched. Unfortunately, this title will be deactivated permanently within the next 30 days, and Mountaintop Studios is set to close by the end of this week. This unfortunate incident echoes Sony’s previous live-service failure, Concord, underscoring the challenging nature of entering the Games as a Service industry in 2025.
According to a tweet from the developer, Spectre Divide is scheduled to shut down within the next month, and the company will cease operations by the end of this week. Players who have made purchases will receive refunds, and all ongoing microtransactions will be discontinued.
The PC version of the game was released in September last year, but its console debut along with Season 1 content happened about two weeks ago. However, the launch of Season 1 didn’t generate enough success to maintain the game or Mountaintop, as stated in their announcement. Sadly, due to a lack of financial support, the studio will have to shut down.
The message goes on: “We explored every possible route to persist, such as securing a publisher, more funding, or being bought out. Regrettably, we couldn’t find a way to keep going. The current state of the industry is challenging.” Upon its initial PC release, Spectre Divide attracted roughly 10,000 players simultaneously, but data from SteamDB shows this number plummeted sharply. It peaked at 337 players on PC within the first day, and although player tracking for PS5 isn’t accessible, it’s apparent that the console versions haven’t been successful enough to support the game and its creators.
Spectre Divide will remain playable on PS5 for a longer duration than Concord, however, for practical purposes, it has met the same fate as when Concord was withdrawn from circulation. To put it simply, the game is no more active now than it was at the time of Concord’s removal. The statement concludes: “The world of game development is filled with unexpected twists, changes, and surprises, and the industry has undergone a significant transformation since we embarked on this project in 2020. Despite falling short of our goals, we wouldn’t give up the experience for anything.
