PS5 Owners Warned Not to Get Banned From PSN Over New Issue

As a seasoned gamer with decades of experience under my belt, I can’t help but feel a pang of frustration at this latest development from PlayStation. I’ve been sharing Google URLs on PSN since the days of the original PlayStation, and never once have I received a warning or breach of conduct notice.

Warning to PS5 and PS5 Pro users: Avoid getting banned from PlayStation Network (PSN). The current console generation, including both PlayStation and Xbox, has seen stricter moderation efforts. As a result, more and more gamers are facing suspensions or bans on PSN and Xbox Live. Some of these penalties are for behaviors that were previously not considered issues or were not enforced. This is due to the growing use of AI/automated moderation.

Currently, the leading post on the PS5 Reddit forum advises that Sony (PlayStation) has increased its efforts to prevent users from sharing links. It seems they are particularly focusing on sending Google URLs, which has been against their Terms of Service or Code of Conduct since the launch of the PS5. However, it appears this rule is now being strictly enforced.

The post reveals they received three emails from PlayStation that code had been breached for sending different Google.com URLs in PSN message. The warning specifically read as follows: “Sharing malicious URLs, including those that may harm another player.”

Previously, regular URLs haven’t been strictly enforced – at least not as far as the PS5 and its userbase, based on comments in related posts, are concerned.

The process is fully automated and starts immediately upon sending a message. It’s worth mentioning that similar events have occurred during the PS5 cycle. Previously, Google/YouTube links were automatically deleted, but this practice never persisted for more than a week. Interestingly, they’ve never issued a breach of conduct email for regular URLs before. Either there’s been an error in their automation or they’re taking a tough stance on URLs, possibly even a drastic approach.

The same thing occurred with me. I believe the emails are nonsensical, as I found that when I shared the Google link on an alternate account, the URL was automatically eliminated for safety reasons. However, they also implemented an automatic system to flag my account for a URL that had been swiftly filtered out. What’s more, since it was sent to my alternative account, it triggered a report, as if I hadn’t reported it myself.

It’s worth noting that both the Xbox Series S and Xbox Series X perform similar functions, which could potentially pose challenges for Sony (PlayStation) and Microsoft (Xbox). Among these challenges are concerns about jailbreaking and user safety. However, users of the PS5 who previously didn’t encounter problems when sharing links might find a change in this situation now.

Currently, PlayStation hasn’t issued any formal statements about the issue, which means there’s no official confirmation that anything has altered. However, some PS5 users have pointed out a change in the situation.
