PS5 Prices Are Increasing in Japan Again

As a long-time gaming enthusiast with a pocket full of memories and countless hours spent on PlayStations, it’s disheartening to see yet another price hike for my beloved console. I remember when the original PS1 cost around $299, and now we’re looking at over $700 for the PS5. It feels like the gaming world is slowly moving towards a subscription-only model with ever-increasing hardware costs.

The continuous challenge of escalating costs in producing new console generations persists, and it seems this problem may continue for some time. Interestingly, Sony has recently announced another price hike for the PlayStation 5 and its accompanying accessories, specifically in Japan.

In a recent blog post on the Japanese PlayStation platform, the company attributed the upcoming price hikes on all PS5 versions, PlayStation VR2, various DualSense controllers, the PlayStation Portal, and additional items to unfavorable shifts in the global economy and challenging external factors. These new prices will take effect from September 2 onwards.

After a new round of price hikes, the PS5 and PS5 Digital Edition will cost ¥13,000 more each, with prices now at ¥79,980 and ¥72,980 respectively. The PS VR2 will set you back ¥89,980 after a price increase of ¥15,000, while the PlayStation Portal will cost ¥34,980 following a ¥5,000 rise. The DualSense controller will now be priced at ¥11,480 after undergoing a ¥2,000 increase.

On previous occasions, Sony has also elevated their prices in Japan. For instance, in 2022, they justified this move by pointing out “elevated global inflation rates” and “unfavorable currency movements”. Consequently, the costs of both hardware and accessories for PlayStation were hiked up not only in Japan but also in numerous other countries.
