As a long-time PlayStation enthusiast who has weathered many console launches and restock shenanigans, I can confidently say that the current disc drive situation for the PS5 Digital Edition and Pro is a rollercoaster ride we’ve all come to know too well. The fact that Sony and GameStop have stock while other retail giants like Amazon, Best Buy, Walmart, and Target are out of it, feels like a glimmer of hope amidst the chaos.
At the moment, you can purchase the disc drive for both the PS5 Digital Edition and PS5 Pro from PlayStation Direct and GameStop. However, supplies could run out quickly. Unfortunately, many other major retailers like Amazon, Best Buy, Walmart, and Target are currently sold out of this popular hardware item. Interestingly, Sony itself, as well as GameStop, have the disc drive in stock for now.
Both are asking $79.99 for the piece of attachment hardware, which is the standard price. The difference though is PlayStation Direct is offering the disc drive to everyone. There are no requirements to meet. There are at GameStop though. During the PS5 restock saga back in 2020, 2021, and even some of 2022, GameStop changed its restock policy for in-demand items, such as this disc drive. More specifically, like previous restocks of this variety, the PS5 Digital Edition and PS5 Pro disc drive restock is limited to GameStop Pro members.
For non-PlayStation Plus members, securing a PlayStation 5 disc drive could mean purchasing from PlayStation Direct or patiently waiting for restocks at other retailers, as the exact timing of these restocks is uncertain. Before the announcement of the PS5 Pro, it was relatively easy to obtain a PS5 console. For those who missed out, it’s important to note that the new $700 Sony console does not include a disc drive by default. Consequently, many PlayStation enthusiasts are scrambling to buy the separate disc drive add-on for existing PS5 consoles.
The current demand for these disc drives isn’t clear, but it seems that stock was scarce due to low demand in the past. Only a small group of people who regretted their all-digital PS5 purchase or were uncertain about it were buying the hardware. However, the all-digital PS5 has been challenging to find in stock compared to the standard model. It’s expected that stock will rise leading up to, during, and after the launch of the PS5 Pro, as Sony is well aware that demand will increase. If they didn’t foresee this before, they certainly do now.
