Initially, the launch of the PS5 Pro in November was successful in the U.S., but it appears to be struggling to sustain that initial momentum. According to Mat Piscatella, an analyst and executive director at Circana, the console is currently lagging behind the sales pace of the PS4 Pro.
Despite Sony revealing that they had shipped 75 million PS5 and PS5 Pro consoles by December 31st, 2024, they didn’t provide individual sales figures for their mid-generation upgrade. Consequently, the spending on video game hardware in January 2025 plummeted to $205 million, a significant 45% decrease compared to the previous year. This figure also represents the lowest spending on game hardware since January 2020.
Furthermore, it was disclosed that the cost of producing PS5 equipment decreased by 38% compared to the previous year. On the other hand, the expenses related to Xbox Series X/S dropped by half, and the Nintendo Switch experienced a drop of 53%.
It’s understandable why the latter two statements hold true given that Xbox hardware has been experiencing declining revenue for years now, and the Nintendo Switch is approaching its eighth year, with anticipation for its successor growing. As for Sony, the Pro model may not have delivered the boost it was hoping for. Only time will reveal the full picture, particularly in the long run, so keep an eye out for future developments.
Video game hardware spending in January saw a significant decrease, falling by 45%, to approximately $205 million. This is the smallest January figure for video game hardware spending since the $131 million recorded in January 2020.

As a gamer, I’ve noticed some significant drops in sales for the major gaming consoles compared to last year. Specifically, my PlayStation 5 spending dropped a whopping 38% this year-on-year, while Xbox Series saw a 50% decline, and Switch sales dipped by an impressive 53%.

The sales pace of the upgraded version of PS5, the PS5 Pro, appears to be slower than that of its predecessor, the PS4 Pro. In January, digital versions made up nearly half (49%) of all PS5 hardware units sold, while an impressive 88% of Xbox Series X consoles were digital SKUs.
