As a gamer who’s been around since the days of the PlayStation 1, it’s always exciting to see classic games getting a modern upgrade. Back in ’97, I was just as enthralled with the likes of Final Fantasy 7 and Crash Bandicoot 2 as any other player. But let’s not forget about Croc: Legend of the Gobbos! It may not have been the star of the 3D platformer scene back then, but it’s making a comeback this year, and I can’t help but feel a bit nostalgic.
This year, we can look forward to the reemergence of a game originally released on the PlayStation 1 (PS1) in 1997, now optimized for the PS5 Pro. In 1997, PlayStation enthusiasts were immersed in an array of captivating games such as Final Fantasy 7, Castlevania: Symphony of the Night, Crash Bandicoot 2, Gran Turismo, Grand Theft Auto, Oddworld: Abe’s Oddysee, Mega Man Legends, Tomb Raider 2, and numerous other remarkable titles. That year was a golden era for gaming on the PS1.
1997 saw Crash Bandicoot 2 as the standout 3D platformer on the PlayStation 1, but it wasn’t the only one. Another favorite, Croc: Legend of the Gobbos, also made its mark. This year, the remastered version of Croc: Legend of the Gobbos is scheduled for release on Nintendo Switch, PC, PS4, PS5, Xbox One, Xbox Series S, and Xbox Series X. The exact date isn’t known yet, but it will offer improvements tailored for the PS5 Pro, which is slated to launch on November 7. As for what these enhancements entail, we’ll have to wait and see, but it looks like this could be the ultimate spot to enjoy the PS1 classic, not just on PlayStation consoles, but across all platforms.
In case you’re unfamiliar, “Croc: Legend of the Gobbos” was first introduced in 1997, exclusively for PlayStation 1. The game was developed by Argonaut Software, a company that ceased operations in 2004 but was revived in 2024 to release this remastered version. Although it didn’t quite measure up to the other popular 3D platformers of its time at the point of its initial launch, it still managed to make an impact, as indicated by its 79 rating on Metacritic.
