It appears Sony has rectified a significant problem with the PS5, an issue that has been present since its release in 2020. The PS5 has proven to be a triumph for Sony in terms of sales, but some PlayStation users have encountered problems. One such issue involved the liquid metal within the console, which could leak if the hardware was positioned vertically. However, with the introduction of the PS5 Pro, it seems Sony has addressed this design flaw in the platform.
In a recent video by How Fix It on YouTube, the PS5 Pro was meticulously dismantled and compared with the standard PS5 model, known as the PS5 Slim. This comparison revealed that Sony has made changes to the heat sink found in the PS5 Pro. Specifically, they’ve redesigned it so that it now has a ridged structure around it. This minor modification helps keep the liquid metal of the heat sink in contact with the APU chip it’s intended to cool.
For a significant reason as to why this adjustment matters, some PlayStation 5 users have warned that the liquid metal inside might leak into other areas of the device if it’s placed vertically. This leakage could potentially harm other components within the PS5 and might cause the system to overheat due to improper cooling.
In essence, the problem of liquid metal leaking from some PS5 consoles wasn’t widespread. It primarily affected users who chose to stand their consoles vertically. When designing the PS5 Pro, Sony made a minor adjustment to the hardware to prevent such spills. Whether this change will completely resolve the underlying issue is uncertain given the PS5 Pro’s newness, but it’s reassuring to potential buyers that they should not expect any such malfunctions when investing around $700 in the premium hardware.
