As a seasoned gamer with decades of experience under my belt, I must admit that the PlayStation 5 Pro has caught my eye like no other console in recent memory. The technical prowess it showcases is nothing short of astounding, and the inclusion of PlayStation Spectral Super Resolution (PSSR) is a game-changer for those seeking the best visuals possible without sacrificing performance.
Regarding pricing, let’s set that aside for now; there’s no question that the PlayStation 5 Pro is a technological marvel. Boasting a high-end GPU and innovative software methods, it makes for an appealing suggestion for avid gamers. Among its impressive technical aspects, one standout feature is the console’s compatibility with PlayStation Spectral Super Resolution (PSSR). This image reconstruction technique guarantees minimal loss in quality at higher frame rates, a significant leap forward compared to contemporary PC solutions such as Nvidia’s DLSS, Intel XeSS, and AMD’s FSR.
It remains to be seen if the PS5 Pro’s PSSR matches or surpasses the alternatives mentioned, but a developer from Gaijin thinks it is comparable to DLSS and XeSS.
In the game “Enlisted”, the team is currently employing PSSR (Pixel Super-Sampling Rate) technology. During development and testing phases, they discovered that PSSR matches up well against NVIDIA DLSS and Intel XeSS, which are other advanced machine learning-based super resolution techniques, according to Gergo Horvath, a Graphics Programmer at Gaijin in an interview with Wccftech.
He remarked, “In my viewpoint, PSSR generates less haze, double images, and unintended flashing compared to AMD FSR. Remarkably, even though it’s the initial version, PSSR is already competing neck-and-neck with more advanced solutions in this area.
It’s intriguing to consider this perspective since technologies like DLSS and FSR have continuously advanced with each update throughout the years. It would be fascinating to observe how PS5 Pro games perform similarly, and if Sony were to incorporate this technology into the hypothetical PS6, we’d definitely be eager to see the outcomes.
Horvath additionally outlined their application of PSSR to obtain higher frame rates at 4K quality, which is made possible by PSSR. In their current projects, “Enlisted” and “War Thunder”, the company plans to operate at 4K resolution and a speed of 120 frames per second on Sony’s latest gaming system.
As a gamer, I’m excited to share that when Enlisted drops on the PS5 Pro, we’ve decided to move from a fixed resolution to dynamic resolution paired with upscaling methods for both the base and pro versions of the console. This change ensures a consistent frame rate throughout gameplay, while the internal rendering resolution automatically adjusts. This means that PS5 Pro players can now enjoy 4K gaming at an impressive 120FPS! Horvath confirmed this update.
Without a doubt, PSSR performs superiorly. For the initial launch of ‘War Thunder’ on the PS5 Pro, we’ll give players the chance to experience the game in 4K resolution at 120 frames per second right from the start. We have additional visual upgrades ready for our next major update, which is scheduled for release in a week, and there are even more improvements currently in development,” he noted.
The upgraded PS5 Pro has significantly enhanced the performance of existing PlayStation 5 games. For instance, No Man’s Sky now runs at an impressive 8k@60fps on these consoles, Baldur’s Gate 3 operates at 4K and 30fps in Quality mode, Star Wars: Jedi Survivor now achieves 4K resolution, Until Dawn Remake has been updated with new Performance and Fidelity modes, and Final Fantasy 7: Rebirth has received a new Versatility mode.
2025 marks the release of native PlayStation 5 games such as “Ghost of Yotei” and “Death Stranding 2.” It’s intriguing to speculate how these titles will utilize the console’s powerful processing capabilities, given their upcoming debut.
