Mark Cerny, lead architect at PlayStation 5, has disclosed that an upgrade to the PS5 Pro system’s Performance Streaming and Scaling (PSSR) feature is expected next year. This update should enable the system to generate outcomes akin to AMD’s FSR 4 upscaling technology. The improvement originates from Sony’s ongoing collaboration with AMD, which is also investigating potential advancements for the PlayStation 6 within Project Amethyst.
Digital Foundry revealed that the future technological enhancement for the PS5 Pro will be unveiled in 2025. Mark Cerny, speaking on behalf of Sony, mentioned their primary focus is improving the current PSSR version and encouraging external developers to incorporate this feature. For titles released next year, Cerny aims to introduce a technology similar to FSR 4’s upscaler for the PS5 Pro as the next phase of PSSR development. This new upscaler should process the same inputs and produce nearly identical outputs, but implementing it is a challenging task due to its ambitious nature and time-consuming requirements, which is why it hasn’t been introduced on the PS5 Pro yet, according to Cerny.
The initial outcome of Sony’s partnership with AMD is the upgraded PSSR scaler, which has been praised as “outstanding” by Mark Cerny. According to Cerny, they are confident that the PS5 Pro’s architecture can handle FSR 4-like technology, even though it requires significant computational power. Their aim is to make this happen, and they think they have what it takes. The computing capacity of the PS5 Pro peaks at 300 Tera Operations Per Second (TOPS) without sparsity, a figure that matches well with the latest AMD GPUs in the market. They don’t find sparsity beneficial for this specific upscaling algorithm.
