PS5 Remaster Debate: Is Days Gone Worth the Upgrade?

Initially, there was much criticism about the rumored remaster of Horizon Zero Dawn, but once gameplay footage surfaced, opinions began to change. At first, it appeared that the upgrade wasn’t necessary, but after it was unveiled, developer Nixxes did an exceptional job enhancing the PS4 original, ultimately receiving highly positive reviews.

In a different phrasing, it seems that Days Gone might not receive the same positive response as initially anticipated. One early comparison video has caused fans to strain their eyes, trying to spot any noticeable enhancements.

On the PlayStation Blog, creative lead Kevin McAllister shares that the game’s title will see enhancements such as better graphical detail, extended leafy landscape visibility, upgraded shadow and lighting effects, 3D Tempest audio technology, Variable Refresh Rate (VRR) compatibility, and additional features on the PlayStation 5. Notably, it will also be compatible with the anticipated PlayStation 5 Pro.

However, even in its original form, the game was visually stunning when played through backwards compatibility on PS5, boasting a smooth 60fps and impressive visual quality. It’s worth noting that this comparison primarily focuses on cutscenes from the Remastered version’s trailer versus the original PC release. Unfortunately, it can be challenging to spot any significant differences between them.

It’s understandable that you might not notice the improvements in the remastered version until you start playing, as that’s when features like extended foliage draw distance will be visible. However, it’s no surprise that fans are disappointed since a significant number of them believe that a remaster isn’t even needed for this game in the first place.

Speaking from a passionate fan’s perspective, I’d like to defend Bend Studio for going beyond mere graphical upgrades with this remaster. They’re introducing new accessibility options that will make the game more inclusive and enjoyable for a wider audience, which is truly commendable. Moreover, the inclusion of new modes such as Horde Assault promises some genuine fun-filled gaming sessions.

Although we appreciate the feedback, it seems some fans might not fully grasp the purpose behind these remasters. Primarily, they’re designed as short-term projects to maintain team employment and allow for experimentation with new concepts. However, due to unforeseen circumstances, Bend Studio is currently dealing with a cancelled main project. It appears that support studio Climax has played a significant role in this undertaking.

In contrast to common belief, it’s highly improbable that this project has diverted resources from something else. Bend Studio never had plans to work on a remaster for a game such as Bloodborne, so it’s not a matter of choosing between this and another project. Moreover, this project isn’t draining resources from the development of a new game either.

To clarify, although we acknowledge your reservations, it’s important to note that Days Gone Remastered isn’t particularly risky or problematic, despite some feelings of redundancy. Spending $10 for the upgrade isn’t a significant concern for us, but it is unfortunate that even with this remaster, there are no plans from Sony for a sequel.
