PS5 Takes Another Giant Stride Towards 100 Million Units Milestone

In the fiscal year ending March 31, 2025, PS5 contributed an additional 18.5 million units to its global hardware tally. Breaking this down further, around 2.8 million units were sold during the fourth quarter alone. This brings the grand total of current-generation system sales up to a staggering 77.7 million units since its launch.

Even though the PS5 has been out for a while now and is still trailing the PS4 by about 1.4 million units, it’s crucial to keep in mind that its price tag is considerably higher – even after accounting for inflation. Interestingly enough, the sales pattern of the two consoles is nearly identical.

Compared to the last financial year, Sony managed to sell approximately 20.8 million PlayStation 5 units. However, it’s important to note that they were quite proactive during this timeframe, as the console had recently started being widely available, having been limited due to stock shortages resulting from the pandemic.

Last fiscal year, our company saw a substantial increase in software sales, selling 303.3 million units compared to 286.4 million the year before. Additionally, we retained more monthly active users, reaching 124 million this time around. Although this is slightly lower than the impressive 129 million from the previous quarter, it’s important to note that the holiday season often yields the highest numbers.

It’s possible that enthusiasts of physical boxed software could feel apprehensive upon hearing that during the past fiscal year, digital sales grew to account for 76% of total sales, compared to 70% in the previous year. This trend once more underscores the significant movement towards digitally downloaded games.

Regarding predictions for the upcoming fiscal year, Sony anticipates a minor reduction in hardware unit sales. However, they’re projecting a rise in sales of first-party software, likely because of the launches of Death Stranding 2: On the Beach and Ghost of Yotei.
