The Spirit of Yotei seems to observe as players collect resources during their journey, thereby sparking curiosity about specific game mechanics.
In a recent blog post on PlayStation, Nate Fox from Sucker Punch shares an amusing tidbit: their exploration of Ainu culture and traditions in Japan, which they conducted during a studio visit.
Throughout the journey, Ainu cultural guide Yukiko Kaizawa was present to familiarize Fox and their companions with the practice of gathering plants and vegetables found nearby, which is known as foraging.
It seemed that the team was quite captivated by the process, leading them to make an impromptu decision to integrate foraging within the game, Ghost of Yotei. While Fox doesn’t delve too deeply, the addition of resource gathering hints at a more engaging and interactive open world compared to that of Ghost of Tsushima.
Fox wrote that our team climbed a nearby hill, where we gathered edible plants and bonded. It was an enjoyable experience for everyone in Sucker Punch, as we put down our cameras and dug into the earth with our hands. This allowed us to truly appreciate the vegetation surrounding us.
Our experience of discovering Ainu culture while making new friends was delightful, marking the beginning of our learning journey. Later that evening, we decided to incorporate foraging as a feature in our upcoming game, aiming to provide players with the immersive experience we ourselves enjoyed.
Next month, we might gain valuable insights into the title’s perspective on foraging during Yotei’s dedicated State of Play presentation. This broadcast promises to offer a genuine sneak peek at the highly anticipated PS5 exclusive, and we’re eagerly anticipating it.
How does this foraging venture strike you? Are thoughts of creating related systems and structures popping up, or do you view it as something less central? Share your thoughts on what kind of vegetation we could gather in the comment section beneath.
