PS5’s Share of Active US Players Is Slowly Beginning to Pummel Xbox

In Europe and Asia, Xbox may not have made much impact for quite a while now; however, the United States has continued to serve as something of a battleground between Sony.

According to Circana’s data analysis, PlayStation 5 consistently leads in monthly sales. However, it faces stiff competition from Xbox Series X|S and Nintendo Switch, which often vie for the runner-up position in many months.

However, recent data from Ampere indicates that the PlayStation is increasingly dominating the Xbox in Microsoft’s home market. By the end of 2022, it was estimated that there were approximately 6 million more active PlayStation users compared to Xbox, and this gap nearly doubled to about 10 million by the end of 2024.

As a dedicated gamer, I’ve noticed something intriguing in the stats we’re dealing with here – they cover PlayStation 4, Xbox One, and the latest console generations. However, it seems there’s a shift happening, as these numbers hint that gamers are gradually drifting away from Microsoft’s ecosystem towards Sony’s.

To determine if the PS5 is gaining ground or the Xbox Series X|S is losing it, we’d require the specific number of active participants in each ecosystem. However, based on our observations, it seems like both situations might be occurring simultaneously to some extent.

Indeed, it adds an extra layer of intrigue when you factor in that Microsoft has recently raised the prices of their consoles. Notably, the 2TB Xbox Series X Galaxy Black Limited Edition now costs slightly above what a PS5 Pro goes for.

There’s a strong possibility that Sony might adapt strategies similar to those of its competitor as a response to current economic circumstances, but if it chooses not to, the edge that PlayStation holds over Xbox could potentially expand further.
