PS6 Portable Has a 15W 3nm SoC, Runs PS5 Games in Lower Resolution – Rumor

The PlayStation 5 Pro, Sony’s mid-generation upgrade for their highly successful ninth-gen console, is barely a year old, and whispers about the PlayStation 6 have been heard. In September 2024, a leaker named Kepler disclosed that the PS6 might incorporate two System on Chips (SoCs).

It’s generally believed that the device in question is handheld and compact. There seems to be growing evidence about its capabilities. As for whether it could match the power of a PS5 if released by 2028, Kepler stated on NeoGAF that “No, it’s a 15W SoC running on a 3nm process.

Consequently, there arose numerous queries such as what purpose the console serves if it doesn’t support playing PS5 games. The leaker made it clear that it does indeed run them, albeit not at the same resolution or frame rate, primarily because of its reduced memory bandwidth.

When asked about the comparison of performance between the PS4 Pro and the upcoming PS5, the leaker stated, “It’s difficult to predict the performance since it uses an unlaunched GPU architecture, but I suspect it falls somewhere in the range of the Xbox Series S and the PS5.” Noteworthy is that the rumored portable version reportedly reaches its limit a few months before the standard PS6’s SoC (System on Chip) hits the market.

Sony isn’t using PS6 chips from the console version for their handheld device. Instead, they have created unique System-on-Chips (SoCs) specifically designed to run at extremely low voltages. These new SoCs have significantly fewer Compute Units (CUs) compared to 40, which is different from the PS6’s. While there are some similarities with the Soundwave design, these SoCs are not identical.

While Sony hasn’t specified when we can expect the release of the PS6, the CEO of Sony Interactive Entertainment, Hideaki Nishino, has hinted that its launch will not be tied to the lifespan of the existing PS5 model.
