In this day and age, as more gaming focuses on internet interaction, it’s clear that we reap numerous advantages. For one, we experience unparalleled connection within our games, and secondly, game developers can make adjustments and enhancements to titles following their release based on player feedback.
However, there are concerns as well. Though everything seems pleasant with the servers functioning smoothly now, some fear that the games could become outdated when the power eventually gets switched off in the distant future.
A popular post over the weekend’s PSN downtime discussed the PS5 Pro’s disc drive, a point to recall that this device needs a one-time connection with Sony’s servers for activation.
A diligent user seized the moment of the outage to check if his disk drive could connect while the PlayStation Network was unavailable, and indeed, it failed to do so. To clarify, any disk drive that had previously been connected to the PS5 Pro could play physical games flawlessly during the downtime, but unfortunately, it wasn’t feasible to correctly link the accessory during the outage.
The issue at hand revolves around a potential scenario where physical games may no longer function on the PS5 Pro or PS5 Slim Digital Edition in the distant future. This is because if PlayStation decides to shut down its servers, you would be unable to connect the disc drive to the console whatsoever.
It’s important to note that Sony’s network infrastructure has multiple levels, and although the outage from yesterday was severe, attaching a disc drive on a PlayStation Network device does not always require the entire system to be operational.
Additionally, it’s possible that a future firmware update might allow for connecting disc drives without needing to establish a connection with PlayStation’s servers.
In essence, there’s no immediate cause for alarm, but it’s essential to consider the long-term issue of digital game preservation. This current generation, which heavily depends on online connectivity, poses the greatest risk in terms of stability so far.
We aspire that regardless of what awaits PlayStation and PSN, the organization will persistently plan ways for players to enjoy their games well into the future. It’s unfortunate to imagine such fantastic content being confined to the past.
