After experiencing an extended (around 24 hours) and significant PSN downtime, the service is now back up and running, as indicated on the PSN Status Page. The PlayStation Support page reveals that all areas of PSN on both PS4 and PS5 — such as account management, gaming and social interactions, PlayStation Video, PlayStation Store, and PlayStation Direct — are functioning smoothly with few to no issues. As for the cause of the outage, Sony has not yet provided details. There’s speculation it could have been a massive DDoS attack, but this hasn’t been verified. Although a hack isn’t completely ruled out, at this moment, it seems improbable.
7 p.m. ET on February 7, I found myself grappling with an unexpected outage on PSN that left me, along with every other gamer worldwide using PS4, PS5, or any other platform, in the cold. It wasn’t just a minor hiccup; everything from online gaming to PS Plus was affected. For me and countless others, this meant no access to our favorite games, and for those with PS Plus Extra or Premium, it also meant being locked out of their respective libraries.
The disruption in PlayStation Network (PSN) services has extended to the PlayStation Store as well. Consequently, both PS4 and PS5 users have found it impossible not only to buy PS4 and PS5 video games from the store, but also to download and ultimately play these games.
Consequences of the PSN outage have encompassed a variety of issues such as inability to chat or interact with friends on PSN, difficulties accessing PlayStation Direct, and an unavailability of PlayStation Video. Additionally, users found it impossible not only to log into their PSN accounts but also make any adjustments to these accounts.
If a user doesn’t designate their PS4 or PS5 as the main console on their PlayStation account, they can still enjoy playing single-player games on it.
