2K has revealed they’re creating a VR version of Civilization VII together with PlaySide Studios, but regrettably, it won’t be playable on PSVR2. Instead, the virtual reality adaptation will debut exclusively for Meta Quest 3 and 3S headsets in Spring 2025.
Unlike the popular “Batman: Arkham Shadow”, for instance, the VR edition of Civilization VII is not being produced in-house at Oculus Studios. It’s possible that an agreement has been made to keep it exclusive to premium Meta Quest headsets (though this hasn’t been confirmed), but either way, PSVR2 won’t be getting this version of Civilization VII, despite the base game launching on PS5 and PS4 next week.

In the virtual reality edition, the map unfolds on a Strategic Table, offering you an overhead view of the gameplay. This vantage point allows you to plan your strategies or get up close to admire the intricate details of your scouts, cities, armies, and Wonders. Observe your empire expand, tailored to reflect your leader’s unique characteristics, or switch to augmented reality whenever you wish, and the Strategic Table will adjust itself to fit within your actual surroundings.
It’s quite normal these days for significant VR games to bypass the PSVR2, given its relatively small user base. Sony has yet to disclose sales figures for this headset, and a former PlayStation executive, Shuhei Yoshida, recently expressed regret over its poor performance.
