In March, Sony is making a permanent price decrease for the PSVR2. This leaves us wondering: Is the PSVR2 still a worthy investment to purchase in 2025?
Reducing the ticket price to £399.99 (for UK), €449.99 (for Europe) for the PSVR2 isn’t exactly shocking given the recent events surrounding this console. With fewer exclusive games that Sony is renowned for, many perceive the PSVR2 as a largely neglected product. It’s disheartening to see such potential go untapped, especially since the PSVR2 is one of the best virtual reality headsets currently available on the market.
Choosing the PSVR2 over other headsets such as the Meta Quest 3 has its merits, particularly for those who own a PS5. The PSVR2 boasts 4K OLED panels with eye-tracking and foveated rendering technology, enhanced by haptic feedback and adaptive triggers in the Sense controllers. Additionally, the headset offers haptic feedback in its design itself, and it’s exceptionally comfortable. These technical features make a strong case for selecting the PSVR2 over other devices.
Despite the fact that Sony’s headset offers some captivating big-budget titles such as Horizon Call of the Mountain and Resident Evil Village VR, it hasn’t been able to entice users away from other platforms due to a lack of high-profile exclusives. Given Sony’s vast portfolio of popular gaming franchises like Spider-Man, The Last of Us, and Ghost of Tsushima, many of us had anticipated or hoped that these experiences would be adapted for the platform. Even Astro Bot, a series born in the VR space, has not received any VR content to date.
Although Sony doesn’t provide much support and people might think otherwise, we remain confident that PSVR2 boasts a substantial and enticing collection of games, primarily driven by third-party developers. Last year alone, we witnessed the debut of Metro Awakening, Phasmophobia, and Alien: Rogue Incursion, all highly recommended for VR gaming enthusiasts.
On the PSVR2, when everything is running optimally, you’ll find it hard to discover experiences as engrossing as those provided. With user-friendly controls, precise tracking, and exceptional comfort, losing yourself in a VR game on the PSVR2 becomes effortless, almost forgetting that you’re physically moving about an empty space while wearing a piece of hardware on your face.
In addition to the major blockbuster games, it’s worth exploring a variety of lesser-known indie titles for PlayStation VR as well. Although they might not be instant bestsellers, they offer a wealth of enjoyable and engaging experiences. For instance, we’ve spent as much time playing refreshed PSVR games like Thumper, casual golf simulators such as Walkabout Mini Golf, and the amusingly quirky Trombone Champ. Even though there aren’t many big new releases in VR gaming compared to traditional screen gaming, there’s still a substantial amount of content to explore if you decide to purchase Sony’s discounted headset.
Speaking of the fresh discount on PSVR2, do you think it’s substantial enough to significantly turn the game around for this headset? Given its history of being let down in various aspects, it’s challenging to wholeheartedly embrace something when the company offering it seems less than fully committed.
This significantly lowered price is indeed enticing, given the superior quality of this headset. It’s not just comfortable, but boasts the clearest and most vivid panels, along with some truly immersive features. Just as we prefer playing games on PS5 for its advanced features like haptic feedback, the same reasoning applies to the PSVR2.
To fully understand VR’s appeal, you really need to experience it firsthand. If you’re just getting started and don’t own a PS5, the Meta Quest 3 might be your best bet as it operates independently without requiring a PC, and it usually costs less than its counterparts—the Meta Quest 3S is priced under £300.
If you’ve already purchased a PS5, the recent price drop makes the PSVR2 cheaper than the base model of Quest 3, and it offers a superior experience as previously discussed. Plus, popular games like No Man’s Sky, Gran Turismo 7, Resident Evil 4, Phasmophobia, among others, are VR compatible on this platform, which means you might already own some of these titles. Furthermore, the PSVR2 now supports PCVR gaming thanks to Sony’s PC adapter, so if you ever decide to explore PC gaming in VR, you’ll have that option with the PSVR2.
By the year 2025, we strongly believe that the PSVR2 remains a worthwhile purchase. It boasts the best iterations of some outstanding virtual reality experiences to date, and with its recently lowered price, it’s more affordable than ever. Although Sony may not be providing complete support for the headset, it still showcases remarkable technology.
