As a seasoned Monster Hunter veteran with countless hours spent hunting and honing my skills, I can confidently say that the latest trailer for the Light Bowgun in Monster Hunter Wilds has sent my heart racing with anticipation. Having wielded this versatile weapon in previous iterations of the game, I am thrilled to see its potential enhancements and new features in action. The rapid-fire capabilities and Wyvernblast mechanic make it seem like we’ll be turning our foes into Swiss cheese.

Currently, Capcom is unveiling a series of new previews showcasing the diverse array of powerful, stunning, and lethal weapons that gamers can utilize in the eagerly awaited action-hunting title, Monster Hunter Rise (Wilds).

In the newest installment of the weapon review series, the focus is on the nimble and mobile Light Bowgun – a miniature cannon that shoots projectiles swiftly. Unlike its bulky, slow-moving cousin, the Heavy Bowgun, the Light Bowgun excels at using various types of ammo from mid-range distances. This versatile weapon also provides its user with enough agility to dodge incoming attacks.

A Light Bowgun can be loaded with various types of ammunition: Normal ammo for causing impact damage, Pierce ammo to pierce through monster hides, Spread ammo for dealing significant damage at close quarters, and Elemental ammo that deals extra harm to monsters vulnerable to specific elements. Additionally, the Light Bowgun can fire a range of ammunition that inflicts status conditions such as poisoning, paralyzing, or putting a monster to sleep, which reduces its effectiveness in combat and offers crowd control support to relieve pressure on teammates.

Furthermore, the Light Bowgun comes equipped with a hidden weapon called Wyvernblast, which functions as a landmine that can be set on the ground. Any monster unfortunate enough to step on it will suffer significant explosive damage. Players have the ability to strategically place multiple Wyvernblasts across the terrain and detonate them either by firing at them or using the Light Bowgun’s less frequently employed melee attack.

In Monster Hunter Rise, the Light Bowgun has been upgraded for a swifter performance than in past Monster Hunter titles. This upgrade includes quicker reload times, innovative avoidance techniques, and novel attacks designed to rapidly discharge special ammunition.

The following alterations and enhancements observed in the Light Bowgun’s gameplay trailer are related to its new playstyle:

  • The time for reloading ammo will be immensely shorter depending on the ammo type.
  • A new Rapid Fire gauge mechanic where you build up energy and use it to activate a special Rapid Fire mode which lets you fire bullets in rapid short bursts. The energy for the Rapid Fire gauge passively regenerates over time and when you successfully hit a monster.
  • The Focus Strike will allow you to fire Wyvernblasts at a monster’s weak spots or wounds like a grenade launcher to deal severe damage to them.
  • A new dodge maneuver where you slide out of the way of a monster’s attacks while shooting at them at the same time.

I’ve yet to hunt a monster that can outsmart bullets

In Monster Hunter World: Iceborne, the Light Bowgun was one of my preferred weapons. It boasted a wide range of evasive maneuvers for reloading ammunition while dodging attacks (and added a dash of coolness to the action), offered a variety of distinctive ammo types that dished out pleasing damage, and provided effective crowd-control options to keep enemies at bay from my teammates.

It’s exciting to notice how Monster Hunter Wilds is working on improving the elusive qualities of the Light Bowgun and adding a Wyvernheart-like feature that lets you fire rapid bullets. Essentially, they’re transforming the Light Bowgun into something akin to a submachine gun, which I can hardly wait to use to blast through the numerous monsters in Monster Hunter Wilds’ extensive roster of colossal creatures.

In 2025, the highly anticipated sequel to one of Capcom’s top-performing Xbox and PC games, Monster Hunter World, titled Monster Hunter Wilds, is set for release on Xbox Series X|S, PlayStation 5, and personal computers via Steam.
