Punam Krishan on ‘intense’ nerves and finding herself through Strictly

As a lifelong cinephile who has seen more medical dramas than actual surgeries, I find myself deeply moved by the heartwarming story of Punam Krishan, a real-life Scottish GP who is stepping out of her scrubs and into sequinned ones for Strictly Come Dancing.

The TV physician, Dr. Punam Krishan from Scotland, has prepared to put on her glittering medical attire for the Strictly competition.

Most people would recognize Krishan from her frequent appearances on BBC’s Morning Live, but if you haven’t sought medical help in Glasgow, you might not know that she is partnering with professional dancer Gorka Marquez for her dance journey on Strictly Come Dancing.

However, how will her health fare during the competition? That largely hinges on the initial outcomes we receive…

There have been a few Morning Live presenters on Strictly before. Have they given you any advice?

Absolutely, they’re emphasizing that we should savor each moment, as time passes swiftly, according to Helen Skelton, Sara Davies, and Gethin Jones.

Have there been several individuals who filled in as guest hosts on Strictly Come Dancing, such as judge Shirley Ballas and former professionals Oti Mabuse and Janette Manrara. Were you acquainted with them prior to their appearance on the show?

Punam: Nope, I’ve never crossed paths with any of them before, which makes it quite intriguing. Even during the launch performance, we shared the stage with them, and I found myself completely awestruck when Shirley was there, my anxiety levels skyrocketed.

I’m really excited to get to know them and hoping that they’ll be kind with their feedback.

Why did you want to do Strictly?

Punam: I’ve been enjoying this show since it first started, and it never fails to make me feel great and happy. Normally, I prioritize others – taking care of my parents, helping my patients, being a mom, a wife. But now, I’m taking a break from that routine to try something entirely new for myself.

It’s worlds apart from what I’m used to. I spend my whole week either in scrubs, leggings or joggers. Working in the NHS can be quite stressful, so this is the perfect antidote to that, to decompress and have some fun.

How did your friends and family react when you said you were doing the show?

Punam: My mum, who’s a medical receptionist, was hilarious, because she’s quite traditional Indian. When I first told her, I felt about 10 years old, as if I was asking her permission.

She inquired, “How is this related to medicine?” To which I replied, “Not a thing at all, and precisely for that reason!” After a few moments of intriguing silence, she’s since become fully engaged.

She’s filled with enthusiasm now, as all her peers are abuzz. I’m equally thrilled for her to experience one of the live performances. My children are bursting with excitement, and the entire school shares in their anticipation.

Absolutely, I’m fortunate to have a great deal of encouragement and backing, with many people cheering me on. This positive energy motivates me immensely, driving me to strive for the best.

Gorka, how’s the training going?

On certain days, it feels similar to the scenario in The Karate Kid with Mr. Miyagi: “Wax on, wax off.” Pam may question, “Why am I doing this?” However, its purpose will become clearer as time goes by.

Occasionally, you might ask, ‘Why must we physically move in this manner?’ To which I respond, ‘I’m not sure, that’s just how things are!’ I believe she has great promise, and we’re eager to take her as far as we possibly can.

I’m planning to give it my very best shot, which is all I can really strive for at this moment. My ultimate goal is to learn dance well enough to honor him, and I aim to go as far as I reasonably can in this journey.
