Puzzle pods!

As a lifelong trivia enthusiast who grew up listening to the BBC’s quiz programs, I can confidently say that these podcasts have taken my love for knowledge and trivia to a whole new level!

If you’re looking for challenging brainteasers, consider purchasing an issue of RT’s Puzzle special that comes with a 16-page supplement. Inside, you’ll find teasers created by Alan Connor, the same puzzle mastermind who worked on the puzzles featured in BBC1’s Ludwig alongside David Mitchell.

As a die-hard film buff, I’m thrilled to share that a fresh season of my favorite podcast kicked off on October 18th. The episode was taped during the TopMob Quiz Weekend at Studley Castle, and it features a fascinating chat between Lucy Porter, Jenny Ryan, and Ken Bruce over lunch. They delve into Ken’s journey of embracing the PopMaster format, his interactions with BBC management trying to tweak the format, their decision to forego a TV adaptation, and ultimately, Ken moving the radio version to Greatest Hits Radio. Here’s to many more rounds of captivating conversations like this! – David Hepworth

The perfect listen for logophiles and lexophiles as host Helen Zaltzman explores the English language. This is the definition of “edutainment”: while the subject matter may sound dry (the etymology and usage of words and phrases), Zaltzman’s unequivocal enthusiasm, deft research and humorous delivery make this an audio delight. The podcast has been running for nine years, so there is a wealth of material to catch up on and, for this RT Puzzles Special, it’s worth checking out episodes 192—97 7 on wordplay. ANNA JONES

Cross Words with Ian Smith

This weekly comic quiz, led by Ian Smith, boasts a straightforward format. Each episode welcomes a comedian to discuss their career with Smith, all while attempting to complete a crossword within 40 minutes. Notable guests include Phil Wang, Rhys James, Maisie Adam, and Paul Sinha. As one might expect, it’s both intriguingly obscure and laughably absurd. A conversation between Smith and Phil Wang about the Looney Tunes movie “Space Jam” gives a taste of the bizarre paths this show can take. JAMES MOTTRAM (paraphrased)

This convenient podcast serves as a wealth of knowledge testing opportunities for listeners. By gathering assorted quiz shows from BBC Radio 4, it provides easy access to popular programs such as the ongoing general knowledge competition “Brain of Britain” and the lengthy “Round Britain Quiz,” where local intellects face off against one another. The podcast also prepares music trivia enthusiasts for upcoming series of “Counterpoint.” TOM GOULDING

Imagine a lively panel game show, similar to the popular QI, but presented as a podcast. In this delightful competition, three guests strive to claim bragging rights by providing clever responses to unusual questions, often with an unexpected twist. Ever wondered which live-action Disney film has a grammatical mistake in its title, whose star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame is positioned on a wall instead of the ground out of respect, or who holds the title of “the most kissed woman in history”? The answers to these questions and many more are waiting for you. With over 100 episodes available, there’s plenty to keep you entertained. This engaging podcast is hosted by JEREMY ASPINALL.

As a fan, I’d put it this way: “James Cutler’s show is like having a trivia night right in your pocket! It’s quick, engaging, and packed with ten diverse questions to keep you entertained for less than ten minutes. With numerous episodes available, it’s perfect for those awkward lulls or energizing a specific type of family gathering. Although the Wurlitzer music might be grating for some, and Cutler’s upbeat personality may not suit everyone, they both fit the content perfectly. From Donald Duck to Donald Trump, there’s something for everyone here!
