As a huge fan of the late ’90s teen movies, I can’t help but feel a pang of nostalgia when I think back to the making of “She’s All That.” The story behind the iconic prom scene is one that resonates deeply with me.
Get the band playing and let the fireflies sway in delight – as Freddie Prinze Jr. and Rachael Leigh Cook recently reunited from their days in “She’s All That”.
At the Los Angeles premiere of Freddie’s new thriller “The Girl in the Pool” on July 25, the old castmates enjoyed reminiscing about the past.
At the red carpet event, Kevin Pollak joined in, as he was both Rachael’s on-screen father in a 1999 film and costarred with Freddie in his latest project. Therefore, they took a photo together.
If the star-studded event wasn’t impressive enough, Sarah Michelle Gellar, who is Freddie’s wife and made an appearance in the teen romantic comedy, was also present to lend her encouragement.
As a huge fan of “Buffy the Vampire Slayer,” I was thrilled to see Sarah Michelle Geller’s recent Instagram post about attending the premiere of Freddie Prinze Jr.’s new movie, “The Girl in the Pool.” Her stunning date night look was absolutely breathtaking. She wore a beautiful white Shushu/Tong dress that hugged her figure perfectly, teamed with black Louboutin heels that added an extra touch of elegance, and accessorized with a matching Destree handbag.
Sarah sweetly added of Freddie’s movie in her Instagram Stories, “I’m ready to watch it again.”
For me, as a devoted fan of the “She’s All That” clan, it’s been an absolute joy to keep in touch with them all these years. And if you ask me about a memorable moment from 2022, I’d tell you about when Rachael surprised Freddie at a special screening of his Netflix holiday movie, “Christmas With You”. What a heartwarming experience that was!
“She was thrilled and wrote ‘What a wonderful night!’ as the caption for their Instagram photo. Everyone should check out @realfreddieprinze in #christmaswithyou – he’s fantastic! Bravo to the entire team, you all did an amazing job.”
Regarding her views on the enduring impact of “She’s All That,” the actress, who featured in its 2021 counterpart titled “He’s All That,” is thankful for the opportunity. Nevertheless, she acknowledges that certain aspects of the original film may not hold up well over time.
In an interview with Us Weekly in 2022, she expressed her concern about the way some people speak about women in their conversations. While she acknowledged that it might be a part of Freddie’s character development, she found the language to be disrespectful and disparaging towards women.
She went on to say, “I’m proud to be linked with the film.” She added, “That was back then. However, certain aspects of it aren’t excellent nowadays. There are parts that are hard to justify by today’s standards.”

Before Freddie Prinze Jr. and Rachael Leight Cook were cast as Zack Siler and Laney Boggs, director Robert Iscove considered various up-and-coming actors for these roles.
In an interview with The Daily Beast in 2014, he shared that he had spoken with Josh Hartnett and several other young actors for the role that eventually went to him. These individuals were either popular in TV shows or making a name for themselves in films. The casting team auditioned countless girls for the part of Rachael, considering options like Leelee Sobieski, Mena Suvari, and Jordana Brewster.
After Prinze got the role as the popular high school president and star athlete, some adjustments were made to the character.
Prinze shared with Today that he softened the character slightly, making him more vulnerable in the script. This change allowed audiences to empathize with the character when he made mistakes and felt remorse, instead of labeling him as a jerk.
3. In the pivotal scene, Prinze found it challenging to act out Laney’s confrontation with Zack, where she exclaimed, “Am I just a gamble?”
She shared with Today, “In that instant, he showed strong emotions. I recall he became visibly moved, and it was the most endearing sight I’ve ever come across.”
In 2013, a heated debate ensued when M. Night Shyamalan claimed he wrote the script for certain films under the name of R. Lee Fleming Jr. However, the latter strongly refuted these allegations. Nevertheless, according to Jack Lechler, who was Miramax’s head of development during the late ’90s, both parties hold some truth in their statements.
Lechner shared with Entertainment Weekly that Shyamalan significantly improved the script. He added depth and developed the characters more fully.
Richard N. Gladstein, the producer, shared with TopMob News that M. Night Shyamalan’s revisions significantly improved the dynamic between Kevin Pollak (playing Laney’s father, Wayne) and the team. However, he mentioned that the script was mostly finalized when it reached him.
5. Cook confessed that he felt uncomfortable during the filming of Laney’s dramatic staircase descent to unveil her new look to Zack, a moment which left a lasting impression in the movie.
“Two dresses were required for a filming scene. One served as a backup for when I had to rush out, trip, and fall in the driveway (as a stunt double). The smaller dress was selected since the original one was unavailable. So, I wore the smaller size, taking deep breaths and preparing myself to descend the stairs quickly without speaking.”
6. In an interview with magazine Interview, costume designer Denise Wingate shared her reasoning behind Laney’s red outfit in the crucial scene.
Prior to that instance, her wardrobe had been quite monotonous according to Wingate. Therefore, when she appeared before Zach, it was less about the dress and more about the vibrant hue she was wearing – a striking departure from her usual drab colors.
7. Prinze confessed to “Today” that he required a stand-in for Zack’s iconic hackey sack scene since the actor accidentally dropped it multiple times during filming.
“I believed I would master it based on their promises of providing a trainer for me. I hadn’t anticipated how much time it would require. On the day of shooting, Rob mentioned we’d film the hackeysack scene. I managed to do it four times in a row, but he reassured me, explaining that we had a world champion hackeysacker as a stand-in who looked like me. Excited, I watched as my double took over, managing to get three good takes from me.”
Cook admitted to wearing the extravagant falafel hat at Laney’s job, explaining to Today, “I requested the falafel hat myself.”
As an obsessed fan, I can’t help but imagine myself in Matthew Lillard’s shoes. When the opportunity arose for me to take on the role of Brock Hudson, MTV reality star boyfriend to the infamous mean girl Taylor (Jodi Lynn O’Keefe), I knew I had to bring my A-game. And what better way to ensure peak performance than by demanding a personal trainer before officially signing the contract? After all, every detail matters when it comes to bringing a character to life on the silver screen.
Iscove told Cosmo that the actor explained, “I need to be muscular since I’ll be in the pool,” so we agreed and let him do it. He worked with a trainer for two months before filming the Real World segments, which were recorded on video instead of film for the rest of the movie.
Sixpence None the Richer’s “Kiss Me” song reached the second spot on the Billboard Hot 100 chart following its appearance in the movie. This placement held for an impressive 16-week tenure within the Top 10. In Europe, the film was titled “Kiss Me” instead of “She’s All That.”
11. Rap artist Lil’ Kim, known for her music, tried her hand at acting for the first time as one of the trendy girls. According to Cook, speaking with TopMob News, there were whispers that he and Freddie had used Lil’ Kim’s wigs. Cook expressed his hope that Lil’ Kim wasn’t watching, but admitted, “I can’t deny it – those wigs are fantastic, and they were available to us. I’m just human, after all.”
The film subtly included some pop culture winks through the names of the main characters. Laney Boggs was a tribute to two beloved roles of Winona Ryder: Lelaina “Laney” Pierce from “Reality Bites” and Kim Boggs in “Edward Scissorhands.” On the other hand, Zack and Taylor were named after members of the popular band Hanson.
Prior to his portrayal of Jess on “Gilmore Girls,” Milo Ventimiglia previously appeared with a minor part as one of the J.V. soccer players whom Zack enlisted to help clean Laney’s residence.
The movie was shot at the same high school that appeared in “Buffy the Vampire Slayer” and “Beverly Hills, 90210.”
Regarding Buffy, Sarah Michelle Gellar, who later became Prinze’s spouse, briefly appeared in the role of the student handing out freshly ground pepper at the high school.
Iscove shared with Cosmopolitan that when we asked her to join us and visit Freddie, she agreed but remained silent throughout. She didn’t utter a word, not even a “thank you” or “no.” It was a mystery why she chose not to communicate, but that was her behavior. Getting Buffy in the movie was significant at that time because Buffy was extremely popular.
In a light-hearted post on Instagram, Gellar quipped, “It seems you truly grasped that my character had no desire for pepper.”
Iscove strongly advocated for including the memorable prom scene in the film, telling Cosmo that he was determined to have an impressive dance number despite the studio’s objections. One method to accomplish this: Introduce more scenes featuring Usher, who graced the role of the school’s DJ (It was the ’90s, after all!).
He explained, “So we filmed additional Usher sequences where he’d remind us of dance class lessons, and so on. We returned to Chicago, where Usher was working on his album, to capture these new scenes and edit them in.”
I once worked with an individual named Dulé Hill, and I could tell that something wasn’t sitting right with him after our dance rehearsal. He shared his disappointment with me, expressing his frustration that he hadn’t been given the opportunity to showcase his tap dancing skills during the performance.
“Prinze described Dulé as an exceptional tap dancer to The Daily Beast. While filming a volleyball scene at the beach, Prinz heard Dulé tapping and sliding his feet on the wooden planks. He asked if Dulé was tap dancing, and Dulé replied, ‘I’m a hoofer.’ This shared passion for dance brought them closer together. They frequently visited a Hollywood dance studio to tap dance, doing so regularly.”
18. The number was choreographed by Adam Shankman, who would go on to direct A Walk to Remember, The Wedding Planner and Hairspray, among other films. Prinze and Shankman immediately hit it off while filming the movie, so much so that he played a large role in Prinze’s 2002 wedding. As he told Today, “The choreographer from She’s All That married my wife and I!”
In an interview with TopMob News, Cook shared that she felt somewhat apprehensive when meeting the late Paul Walker. Sadly, he passed away in a car accident in November 2013, leaving behind a legacy at the age of 40. According to Cook, “He was an exceptional actor, but he didn’t come across as someone trained in acting. He appeared more like a natural surfer who was unexpectedly brought onto a film set and turned out to be quite skilled.”
She remarked, “He wasn’t extremely sociable; instead, he focused on his tasks and preferred solitude.” I must admit, I found him somewhat intimidating – not only because of his height but also due to his good looks. Impressive indeed.
20. In 2016, the Internet was abuzz with excitement over the unexpected real-life encounter between Prinze and Cook. Cook shared that it was the unfortunate passing of Walker which led them to reunite.
In 2013, following Paul’s unexpected passing, I was struck by the realization of life’s brevity. I thought about reaching out to him, someone I cared for deeply, whom I would have loved to reconnect with. It had been a long time since we last spoke, but it took me an additional three years before I finally contacted him. We eventually met up over a delightful coffee and pastry spread.
