This week, Countdown returns with fresh episodes for its 2025 season, but long-term fans may notice that one familiar face is absent.
Beginning from today, Monday, 24th February, Colin Murray will have Dr Tom Crawford as his new co-host. A fresh set of competitors will then begin a timed challenge, testing their intelligence with both words and numbers.
Speaking of Rachel Riley, it seems she won’t feature in the forthcoming episodes, as Dr Crawford has been tapped to take her place instead.

Why is Rachel Riley not on Countdown?

For a short period, Rachel Riley will take a break from hosting Countdown as she dedicates her time to another venture. In her absence, a new face, Dr Crawford, will assume the role of the numbers specialist.
Riley, a cast member since 2009, recently shared on Instagram that she’s wishing good fortune for Dr. Crawford following some news they both announced.
Wishing you great success, @tomrocksmaths, during your upcoming stint on Countdown!
Starting on Monday for the next three weeks, Dr. Tom will be looking after my numbers while I’m out of town. I have a good reason for being gone, which I’ll share with you soon.
Since we’re both math enthusiasts from Oxford and advocates for the national numeracy campaign, our interaction will feel seamless. Enjoy yourself, Tom, and all our dear viewers, enjoy the show!
Who is Rachel Riley’s replacement on Countdown?
In 2012, Dr. Tom Crawford, a skilled mathematician, earned his undergraduate degree in Mathematics from Oxford University.
Afterward, he continued his academic journey, earning a PhD in the field of Fluid Dynamics from the University of Cambridge. His expertise lies in the area of Applied Mathematics.
As a cinephile, I might say something like: “Beyond my love for films, I’m privileged to be a Fellow by Special Election in Mathematics at St Edmund Hall, University of Oxford.” It maintains the first-person perspective while highlighting both passions.
Dr Crawford has his own YouTube channel, Tom Rocks Maths, with over 200,000 subscribers.
