Ralph Ineson is a talented actor, yet it’s challenging for any human to fully grasp and portray the essence of an immortal cosmic entity like Galactus. In “The Fantastic Four: First Steps,” Ineson plays Galactus, and he recently shared his approach to embodying this character in a new Empire interview published on Thursday. Although it’s inherently difficult, Ineson began by focusing on Galactus’ immense size and scope in comparison to his surroundings. This involved envisioning mountain tunnels as his windpipe and trachea, and visiting high places whenever possible.
Ineson shared that we visited numerous skyscrapers as well. Specifically, we attended a wedding on the roof of the Gherkin building in London. Most of the afternoon, I found myself lost in thought, gazing out over the cityscape. Unfortunately, my wife scolded me for not interacting with the bride and groom sooner.
As a dedicated cinephile, it’s not hard to comprehend why an actor like Ineson would find himself in a challenging predicament when attempting to embody the enigmatic character of Galactus. The hype surrounding this Marvel movie character is understandable, considering the previous on-screen portrayal of “Galactus” fell short of expectations for many fans. According to Marvel Comics lore, Galactus stands at a towering height of nearly 30 feet and boasts an overwhelming weight exceeding 16 tons. Yet, this colossal figure is not set in stone; he possesses the ability to alter his size and form. Remarkably, his dimensions can fluctuate depending on the number of worlds he has consumed recently.
Ineson described him as an influential power from the cosmos, somewhat like a deity. He playfully drew parallels between his latest character and his beloved role on The Office, stating, ‘I don’t believe Galactus is wicked. Finchy, however, is quite a handful.’
In the comic book world, pinning down exactly who Galactus is can be tricky because his history has been altered numerous times through retcons. Additionally, the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU) often alters characters, locations, and narratives to fit its distinctive vision, keeping fans guessing and shielded from spoilers. In the story First Steps, Galactus will make an appearance in a timeline separate from the rest of the MCU, but it’s been hinted that these two timelines may intersect in Avengers: Doomsday. Whether or not Galactus will also visit Earth-616 is uncertain, but it’s definitely within the realm of possibility.
The film “The Fantastic Four: First Steps” will be released in theaters on July 25th. Prior to that, another Marvel Cinematic Universe title, “Ironheart,” is set to premiere on June 24th, exclusively on Disney+.
