Ralph Macchio Reveals the Drama Behind Karate Kid: Legends and Cobra Kai Timeline Conflict

Spoilers for Karate Kid: Legends lie ahead, so read on at your own discretion.

2025 saw the arrival of “Karate Kid: Legends” at cinemas, concluding a journey that started years ago for enthusiasts like myself. I’d known about the movie’s announcement in 2022 and was excited to find out it would feature both Ralph Macchio as Daniel LaRusso and Jackie Chan as Mr. Han. What I didn’t anticipate, though, was the frequent debate surrounding the film’s release in light of “Cobra Kai”. Recently, Macchio himself reminisced about that period of uncertainty.

I’ve been eagerly anticipating the release of “Legends,” as it was announced this intriguing story would unfold post-events of “Cobra Kai.” Interestingly enough, both productions were halted due to the 2023 Hollywood strikes. Lately, it’s been clarified that the film will commence three years after the TV series concludes.

Ralph Macchio, a key figure in this project, shared with THR his desire for the movie to premiere once the television show had wrapped up its episodes. Originally scheduled for 2024, he voiced his opinion to the higher-ups about his preference for a later release date – ensuring that viewers would have seen the entirety of “Cobra Kai” before diving into “Legends.

Originally scheduled for a December 13, 2024 release, I found myself expressing enthusiasm daily: “This movie needs to follow [Cobra Kai]’s conclusion.” Once the marketing team understood that the December ’24 date wouldn’t work for either project, they made the sensible decision to move it to May 2025. Karate Kid: Legends is now set to debut at a time when I hope the fans of Cobra Kai are eagerly anticipating another installment.

I Thought Karate Kid: Legends Was Going To Be A Cash-Grab, But As A Fan, I Was Pleasantly Surprised

Originally, legends had set a release date for June 2024, but later changed it to December of that year instead. The spinoff TV series associated with the franchise (accessible via Netflix subscription) concluded in February 2025. Actor Ralph Macchio chose to delay the film’s release because he didn’t want fans to become bewildered about the Karate Kid timeline. In his words, the situation seemed somewhat stressful, and I wouldn’t have expected such persistent communication from the star and executive producer regarding their feelings on the matter, given that it’s a significant intellectual property we’re discussing.

In essence, I believe the actor was undeniably right in proposing that the movie should be released in 2025, following the conclusion of Cobra Kai. This timing seems logical from a logistical perspective since fans wouldn’t need to study any kind of timeline to understand where the film fits within the Karate Kid universe. Moreover, the actor, known for his role in Outsiders, made valid points regarding the character development, as it aligns with where Daniel and even Johnny Lawrence (who appears in the post-credits scene) are at that point in their stories.

At the close of Cobra Kai, he concludes in an optimistic manner, with him and Johnny Lawrence poised to grow even further as individuals. In Karate Kid: Legends, he exhibits traits much like Miyagi, demonstrating deep sensibilities and practical wisdom. Cobra Kai’s narrative strategy was to portray him as impulsive and confrontational towards Johnny Lawrence for the sake of Johnny’s redemption, which led me to ponder when we would visit “Miyagi-land.” I expected Daniel LaRusso to embody all the wisdom gained from his mentor, a balanced upbringing, success in life, a thriving business, and a loving marriage. And that is precisely where he ended up.

In Karate Kid: Legends, there were a few points I felt could’ve been elaborated on. For instance, I wished they’d given a proper nod to Jaden Smith’s character Dre Parker from the 2010 film. Additionally, I would have appreciated more in-depth information about Mr. Han’s transformation from a handyman into the respected sensei he became. However, these are relatively small points compared to ensuring that the release strategy fit seamlessly within the established timeline.

Without a doubt, Ralph Macchio’s persistence clearly demonstrates his dedication to this series. He’s been instrumental in shaping its direction for quite some time, and it’s only fair that he receives recognition for his efforts. Although details about future appearances of Macchio as Daniel LaRusso haven’t been disclosed yet, I can only hope he continues to contribute in some capacity. In the meantime, don’t miss him in “Karate Kid: Legends,” now showing in cinemas.
