Before his performance at the Super Bowl, it was talked about that Kendrick Lamar might include a discreet nod to PlayStation – and indeed, he did.
As the Philadelphia Eagles handily defeated the favored Kansas City Chiefs, a rapper stood on four stages modeled after PlayStation’s iconic controller symbols, gracing the global spotlight.
As per an article in Wired, Lamar chose to use PlayStation symbols to convey his life as a video game-like experience. The performance kicked off with a drone light display that read ‘Game Over’, possibly hinting at his well-known rivalry with rapper Drake.
frankly speaking, even though we don’t have a definite view on the performance itself, it was slightly frustrating for us that the symbols were arranged incorrectly. Normally, Sony arranges their symbols in a clockwise direction starting from the controller, which is usually Triangle, Circle, Cross, Square. However, during the halftime show, they appeared as Circle, Cross, Triangle, Square, at least based on the camera view during the broadcast.
Essentially, what seems important here is how the basic geometric patterns have become symbolic of PlayStation, reflecting the impressive branding work done by Sony throughout their years. In other words, these shapes have become instantly recognizable as part of the PlayStation brand.
