For quite some time, there was a strong belief among fans of Naughty Dog that the foundation for their upcoming sci-fi game, before the unveiling of Intergalactic, would be the in-game comic from The Last of Us titled Savage Starlight and that it might even bear the same name. This fictional series is regularly featured within The Last of Us, presented as comic books and posters.
Indeed, the theory was disproven following the announcement of Intergalactic towards the end of last year. However, it seems that fans were on the right track with their hint, to some extent. A fansite named Naughty Dog World shared on Twitter a discovery they made regarding The Last of Us expansion, Left Behind. In this game, there appears to be a subtle reference to spaceships and the term “intergalactic”.
Similar to a colossal interstellar spacecraft boasting two propulsion systems,” is the quote from the DLC. In the Intergalactic trailer, we observe protagonist Jordan activating the two engines of her Porsche-esque spaceship, propelling herself towards a distant planet.
2020 saw Naughty Dog starting development on a game titled Intergalactic, which doesn’t seem to be an intentional nod to the PS5 game from a decade ago. However, it does provide an interesting tidbit now that we know their current project. Could there be a connection and Savage Starlight serve as a follow-up? As players, we should keep our eyes open for potential references while playing Intergalactic. Fingers crossed that its release happens within the next two years.
