Just as you likely haven’t used terms like “gib” or “Scadutree” according to their original creators’ intentions, it’s highly possible that you haven’t pronounced “Balatro“, a popular poker-like game created by indie developer Localthunk, in the correct way either.
Stephen Totilo from Game File consistently delivers quality video game reporting, and recently uncovered a fascinating tidbit: even though we’ve all been pronouncing this particular game incorrectly, it appears that’s not how its creator intended it to be pronounced. The way we’ve heard or said the name ourselves doesn’t align with the creator’s preferred emphasis or intonation.
It appears that while everyone’s been praising the deliciousness of “ba-LAH-tro”, it seems Localthunk, possibly intoxicated by his newfound influence and riches, has been referring to it as “BAH-luh-trow” all this time, and likely chuckling behind his hand at our expense.
In the conversation with Naman Budhwar, who heads video marketing at Balatro publisher Playstack, Totillo casually mentioned: “He’s not particularly fussy about the way things are phrased.” However, a recording of their discussion suggests that his pronunciation is quite eerie and quintessentially British, making it hard to put into words.
