For approximately a decade since the debut of Marvel’s Daredevil on Netflix, an integral aspect has been consistently present in the series: the extensive “one take” hallways battle sequences. This innovative approach made its entrance with the second episode of Daredevil, captivating Marvel enthusiasts so much that it evolved into a key feature not only for each subsequent season but also for the Defenders crossover. After the Netflix era concluded and Charlie Cox reprised his role as Daredevil within the Marvel Cinematic Universe, even his appearance in She-Hulk paid tribute to the hallway fight scenes that shaped the small screen hero’s image.
As the highly-anticipated debut of Daredevil: Born Again approaches, let’s revisit some memorable hallway fight scenes involving Daredevil and rank them from mediocre to outstanding. While opinions may vary for the top four spots, there’s a strong consensus about which one stands out as the absolute best among all.
5) The Defenders Hallway Fight Scene
It’s thrilling to watch Daredevil, Jessica Jones, Iron Fist, and Luke Cage together in an action scene for the first time in The Defenders. However, their take on the iconic hallway fight falls short of the high standards set by previous scenes. Despite being skillfully edited to appear as a single shot, each punch and kick is clearly composed of multiple takes. Unfortunately, the choreography and editing in this version of the hallway fight lacks excitement and is so disorganized that it fails to be visually engaging at all.
To put it simply, while The Defenders’ rendition of the hallway fight does boast two impressive scenes – Luke Cage’s dramatic entrance set to Run the Jewels’ hit song and Daredevil’s intense confrontation with Elektra – overall, the sequence falls short and doesn’t live up to its potential. Regrettably, this fight scene mirrors the experience of watching The Defenders TV series as a whole, which ultimately did not meet viewer expectations.
4) She-Hulk’s Daredevil Fight Scene
I was thrilled to see Charlie Cox reprise his role as Matt Murdock in the She-Hulk: Attorney at Law series on Disney+, but the reception among fans was somewhat divided upon its release. This was partly due to Daredevil’s portrayal in the show, which seemed to embody a comedic tone rather than the brooding drama that fans had come to love. Consequently, She-Hulk put its unique spin on the iconic “hallway fights” that made Daredevil such a beloved TV show, but with an unexpected twist. As a movie enthusiast who appreciates both the drama and humor in superhero stories, I’m eager to see how this unfolds!
It’s important to mention that although the hallway fight featuring Daredevil in She-Hulk ranks lower on the list due to its brevity, it shouldn’t be dismissed as poor quality. This scene, which cleverly satirizes audience expectations and demonstrates the She-Hulk team’s understanding of the series’ tone and fitting it into the broader MCU framework, is a testament to their comedic prowess. While some fans may not have appreciated it, its placement on the lower end of the list doesn’t necessarily reflect its merit. Interestingly, even Daredevil himself seems somewhat disheartened that he didn’t get a more substantial hallway fight in this episode.
3) Daredevil Season 3 Hallway Fight
In disguise as Foggy, Matt sneaks into a prison to uncover Fisk’s plan. However, he didn’t anticipate that many police officers and prison staff were still under Fisk’s control, leading to a modified version of the iconic hallway fight scene from Season 3. This alteration might just be the most distinct interpretation among all the versions. Since Matt is playing the role of Foggy in this scene, he doesn’t have his superhero suit or mask, not even sunglasses. Instead, it’s Charlie Cox, bare-faced and unmasked, delivering and receiving blows throughout the fight, which is as raw and intense as the others, albeit less “entertaining” in terms of combat compared to previous instances.
One distinctive feature of the fight scene in Daredevil‘s Season 3, lasting nearly ten minutes, isn’t just action-packed. In fact, there’s a significant pause in the combat midway through where Matt develops an alliance with Albanian prisoners, which assists him in escaping the prison. This quieter, more dramatic interlude is strategically placed amidst heart-pounding action and contributes significantly to the storyline. What makes it stand out is that it preserves the uninterrupted “one shot” filming style throughout the sequence, without any discernible cuts in the footage.
2) Daredevil Season 2 Hallway Fight
The initial hallway fight from Daredevil set an incredibly high standard, yet the team behind Season 2 came very close to surpassing it. What truly sets the Daredevil Season 2 fight apart is that throughout most of the preceding episode, Daredevil was bound by The Punisher with chains and a gun taped into his hand, trigger finger ready. When he ultimately confronts the Dogs of Hell in a hallway, one of his hands is immobilized because it’s holding a gun, while the other is chained up. Despite these limitations, Daredevil manages to turn the situation around.
As a die-hard cinema enthusiast, I must say that Daredevil’s arsenal compels him to think outside the box in truly exceptional ways, making this fight scene one of the most memorable moments in Marvel’s Daredevil. He employs the chain to shatter lights and ensnare some adversaries around their necks, propelling them down stairs and swiftly into the Emergency Room. However, what places this Daredevil hallway brawl on the list rather than at the pinnacle is its underwhelming conclusion. Yet, it undeniably packs a punch and stands as a standout moment within the entire series.
1) Daredevil Season 1 Hallway Fight
As a die-hard fan of Marvel’s Daredevil, I firmly believe that the Season 1 hallway fight remains the crown jewel of the series. This scene is not just visually stunning but also serves as a pivotal character development moment. Even when Daredevil gets tossed into a room off the hallway, the suspense and anticipation are palpable due to the clever use of sound effects and teased visuals. It’s a testament to the skillful craftsmanship and storytelling that goes into making this show extraordinary.
Prior to this confrontation, taking place at the conclusion of Daredevil’s second installment, there was only one significant action sequence beforehand – the rain-soaked fight in the finale of the premiere. Thus, when the hallway brawl commences, it marks the initial opportunity for Daredevil as a hero to display his talents and abilities.
In this scene, Charlie Cox is relentlessly clashing with the Russian mobsters who’ve laid a trap for him. It isn’t just a display of his fighting skills as a tough, street-level Marvel Cinematic Universe character; it also serves as an introduction to the character for the audience at large. Each adversary that emerges bruised and battered from the fight tells a tale to the criminal underworld of New York, whispering that the devil they’re dealing with doesn’t play fair.
I’m absolutely thrilled to share that the captivating trio of seasons from Marvel’s Daredevil, along with The Defenders and She-Hulk: Attorney at Law, are now available for streaming on Disney+. And here’s some fantastic news for fellow fans – Daredevil: Born Again will make its grand return on Tuesday, March 4th!
