Initially, when the Young Avengers debuted, they appeared to be a group modeled after younger versions of the original Avengers heroes. They included young iterations of Captain America, Iron Man, Hawkeye, Ant-Man, Hulk, and Scarlet Witch. But it wasn’t long before these characters established their unique identities; Iron Lad was actually a variation of Kang, Patriot was the grandson of another Captain America, and Hulkling was a future ruler of the Kree-Skrull empire. The comic series “The Children’s Crusade” revealed that two of them were actually Scarlet Witch’s previous children. In the second volume, new members joined the team, allowing the Young Avengers to forge their own distinct path.
Although groups such as The Champions and West Coast Avengers have stepped into their roles as the Marvel Universe’s young hero teams, the Young Avengers continue to hold a significant place in iconicity. There are whispers that they could become major players in the Marvel Cinematic Universe down the line. However, it should be noted that not every member possesses the same level of power as the top-tier heroes.
12) Prodigy
Prodigy, a character introduced in the second series of Young Avengers, isn’t particularly effective in fights. However, he possesses an extraordinary ability due to his brain power. He’s a psychomimetic, meaning he can instantly absorb all the knowledge and skills from anyone or anything he observes. This makes him more of a strategic asset on the battlefield, helping predict attacks and offer tactical advantages, rather than being a strong offensive weapon.
11) Patriot
Initially, Patriot appeared to be a youthful replica of Captain America, fueled by the super soldier serum. Yet, it was later revealed that he wasn’t an authentic hero at all; instead, he had been deceiving everyone by using the illicit Mutant Growth Hormone (MGH). This hormone, developed following Scarlet Witch’s “No More Mutants” declaration, was initially designed to restore mutant abilities. However, it also worked on ordinary humans. Without the MGH, Patriot lacked powers. Over time, this hormone transformed his body, bestowing him with natural abilities, but he eventually chose to lead a tranquil life away from heroics.
Elijah Bradley, son of the original Captain America, Isaiah Bradley, had been pretending to be strong and capable using the MGH. However, when the hormone mutated his body, giving him actual powers, he retired and opted for a peaceful lifestyle.
10) Hawkeye (Kate Bishop)
Kate Bishop made her debut in the first issue of Young Avengers, Vol. 1, and it’s amazing to think that was her initial appearance given how long she’s been around. She lacks superpowers, but at the outset, she was simply an Olympic-level archer. Thanks to training with Clint Barton, aka the original Hawkeye, she has significantly improved her skills. In recognition of her abilities, Clint even permitted her to use his codename. Although she’s not particularly powerful without her archery gear, she is a proficient martial artist. Interestingly, among the Young Avengers, only Hawkeye has received her own MCU Disney+ series.
9) Stature
As a devoted cinephile, I’ve always found it fascinating to delve into the intricate lives of Marvel’s characters. Allow me to share the captivating tale of Scott Lang’s daughter, Cassie. When she was just a child, I remember Scott had limited but cherished visits with her, which often included playful roams around the grand Avengers Mansion. Like any child yearning for their parent’s footsteps, Cassie dreamt of possessing powers similar to her father’s. Her dreams led her down an intriguing path when she dabbled with Pym Particles.
In the initial issue of the Young Avengers series, we witnessed Cassie’s unique ability to expand in size, a gift bestowed upon her by the Pym Particles that had subtly transformed her body over years of exposure. Despite her immense power, tragedy struck in the Children’s Crusade storyline, where Cassie met an untimely end. However, much to our relief, she was miraculously resurrected and took on the mantle of Stinger, joining forces with her father.
In the Marvel Cinematic Universe, Cassie has made a splashy appearance in the Ant-Man movies, continuing to captivate audiences with her extraordinary journey.
8) Speed
Initially, Speed wasn’t an inaugural member of the Young Avengers, yet he was someone they enlisted when they found themselves in need. Vision (Jonas) broke into the Avengers’ databases to find potential allies, and what ensued was astonishing. It turned out that Tommy, whom we thought was just a random recruit, was actually the reborn son of Wanda Maximoff, with Billy (Wiccan), an original team member, being her actual child. While Billy has magical abilities, Tommy exhibits speed powers akin to those of Wanda’s twin brother, Quicksilver. With speeds reaching approximately 761 miles per hour, Tommy proves to be a formidable asset, albeit slower than other speedsters, thus limiting his potential in terms of using his speed.
7) Vision (Jonas)
Jonas is essentially a revamped version of The Vision, who’s been an Avenger for quite some time. His story started when a young Nathaniel Richards showed up on Earth-616 and found the destroyed Avengers Mansion (after the “Avengers Disassembled” event). He noticed the damaged Vision and integrated his operating system into his armor to help him reform the Young Avengers. When Iron Lad left, the armor stayed behind and transformed into a new Vision. He named himself Jonas, and although he’s technologically advanced, his emotional maturity and knowledge are limited because they were based on Iron Lad’s mindset. After Cassie Lang passed away during the “Children’s Crusade,” Iron Lad destroyed The Vision, and since then, he has been the AI inside Nathaniel Richards’ armor, now known as Immortus.
6) Hulkling
Hulkling demonstrates impressive power given his current command over military forces. Initially, when the Young Avengers were established, Hulkling adopted a persona reminiscent of their version of the Hulk. Yet, he was far more than just that; he assumed this identity to keep the team’s likeness to The Avengers consistent. However, it was later unveiled that he was actually a Skrull who could change shapes. As Super Skrull and the Kree appeared on the scene, his true origins were revealed: he is the son of Captain Mar-Vell and a Skrull princess, making him a hybrid between the Kree and Skrull species. Now, he serves as emperor of the United Kree-Skrull Empire, although he ranks below the five most powerful members within the Young Avengers in terms of power.
5) Kid Loki
Essentially, what we’re saying is that Kid Loki is none other than the trickster god, Loki himself. During the events of “Siege,” Loki played a double game, aiding Norman Osborn while seemingly collaborating with his fellow Asgardians. When he realized his scheme to restore Asgard to the Nine Realms was doomed and Norman would permit Sentry to destroy it, Loki chose self-sacrifice. He appealed to Odin and employed the Norn Stones against the Void, resulting in his own demise. However, he was reborn as Kid Loki. After being rejected by his fellow Asgardians, he joined the Young Avengers during their second volume. Despite being a child, Loki retained immense power, but he needed to rest more between casting spells and there were limits on how potent those spells could be.
4) Iron Lad
In a different timeline, Nathaniel Richards is a young man who will one day transform into the infamous Kang the Conqueror. However, unlike his future self, Nathaniel yearns to be a hero and escape this destiny following an encounter with the actual Kang from another time. To achieve this, he traveled to Earth-616, intending to join the Avengers. Unfortunately, upon arrival, he discovered that the Avengers had already been annihilated. In their absence, he formed his own team, the Young Avengers. However, his strong-willed nature led him to depart from the group in search of a different path. He is equipped with much of Kang’s advanced technology from the future and exhibited immense power by seemingly slaying Kang, only to reappear later to assist in defeating Doctor Doom. Tragically, he was also responsible for destroying Vision (Jonas). Despite his best efforts to stray from his destiny, Nathaniel ultimately became Kang and eventually transformed into Immortus.
3) Marvel Boy
Marvel Boy, who hails from Earth-200080, wasn’t first introduced in the Young Avengers comic series, but it was there that he demonstrated his heroic qualities. Originally a villain in the Marvel Universe, Noh-Varr had once used Captain Mar-Vell’s title as part of Norman Osborn’s Dark Avengers. He is a youthful Kree warrior whose parents were Captain Glory and Star Splendor. After betraying the Supreme Intelligence to protect Earth, he embarked on a journey to become a hero. Subsequently, he started dating Kate Bishop and joined the Young Avengers, where she was already a member. His Kree physiology grants him powers surpassing those of most Earth-bound heroes, and he has the ability to control his entire body mentally.
2) America Chavez
In the thrilling pages of the second volume of Young Avengers, it was I, America Chavez, who burst onto the scene to thwart Kid Loki’s daring attempt to seize Wiccan’s powers. But as our tale unfolded, even Kid Loki and I found ourselves becoming part of this extraordinary team. Born in the Utopian Parallel, a dimension that transcends time and space, I am one of the rare characters without multiple dimensional counterparts. I was drawn to Earth-616 with a mission: to safeguard Wiccan from Loki across different timelines. With superhuman strength, durability, and invincibility, I’m a force few can match. My power levels consistently outstripped Kid Loki, but my most remarkable ability is the creation of Star Portals – gateways that enable me to traverse the Multiverse.
1) Wiccan
In no doubt, the most formidable character among the Young Avengers is Wiccan, or Billy Kaplan. He carries the essence of one of Wanda Maximoff’s twin children inside him, giving him magical abilities that match those of his mother, a Marvel figure renowned for her mystical might. His powers are similar to Scarlet Witch’s reality manipulation, yet he employs incantations instead of spells to activate his magic. Moreover, it is prophesied that Billy will transform into the Demiurge, an entity with virtually unlimited reality-altering powers. In House of M, Wanda demonstrated these abilities, and rumors suggest that Billy could surpass even her when he assumes this form.
