Ransom Canyon S2: What’s Next for Staten, Quinn & More?

WARNING: SPOILERS ahead for Ransom Canyon.

The second season of Netflix’s Western series “Ransom Canyon” may need to deviate from the plotlines of the book series by Jodi Thomas that shares the same name. While the TV show and the 2015 novel have several differences, many characters from the books are also present in the show. The season 1 finale of “Ransom Canyon” left Staten Kirkland walking away from his complicated romantic relationship with Quinn O’Grady, who is his deceased wife’s best friend and the woman he couldn’t quite let go. Additionally, Lucas faces a dilemma about choosing a college to attend, with thoughts of his high school sweetheart, Lauren Brigman, always on his mind.

The Ransom Canyon book series penned by Jodi Thomas introduces numerous fresh characters not found in the initial cast of Netflix’s Ransom Canyon season 1. Although some characters from the first novel recur in subsequent books, such as Staten, Quinn, Lauren, Lucas, and the elusive drifter Yancy Grey, they play lesser roles in future installments, allowing for new main characters like Angela Harold, Jubilee Hamilton, Parker Lacey, and Gabe Snow to step into the limelight. Consequently, April Blair, who adapted Ransom Canyon for Netflix, may need to selectively draw from the various storylines within the Ransom Canyon book series to preserve the initial cast for season 2.

Staten & Quinn Get Married & Have Children

This Occurs In Books 1 & 2 Of The Book Series

One significant difference between the original “Ransom Canyon” novel and the Netflix series lies in the plot point where Quinn becomes pregnant with Staten’s child. This event occurs around the midpoint of the book, and Quinn chooses to raise their firstborn with Staten, who initially expresses reservations about the situation. Furthermore, the development of Staten and Quinn’s relationship in the novel is more casual and frequent, contrasting with the Netflix series, which emphasizes more misunderstandings and enigma in their “will they, won’t they” dynamic.

In the sequel to “Ransom Canyon,” titled “Rustler’s Moon,” published in 2016, I came across a new character named Angela Harold who noticed Quinn and Staten, their firstborn in tow, roaming around town. It’s important to note that this story takes place in Crossroads, Texas, not Ransom Canyon as one might assume. Angela hinted that Quinn was expecting again in “Rustler’s Moon,” which makes me speculate that Staten and Quinn may have tied the knot and started a family, as suggested in Netflix’s second season of “Ransom Canyon.” Although it didn’t appear to be the case at the end of the first season on Netflix, I believe they will eventually find their happily ever after, given the storyline from the source material.

Lauren Moves To Dallas & Lucas Becomes An Attorney In Austin

Their Dynamic Resurfaces In Books 5 & 6

In the Ransom Canyon book series, unlike the Netflix series, Lucas decides to attend Texas Tech University instead of contending with a selection of top-tier American colleges. In the fifth book of the series, Wild Horse Springs (published in 2017), Lauren graduates from college and resides in Dallas. By this time, several years after the events portrayed in Netflix’s Ransom Canyon season 1, Lucas has moved on significantly from where Lauren is in her life. Living on the opposite side of Texas in Austin, Lucas pursues a career as a young lawyer.

In the story of “Wild Horse Springs,” a fresh character named Tim, who is romantically involved with Lauren, makes an appearance. Unlike in season 1 of “Rasnom Canyon,” Tim isn’t featured there. Notably, the narrative suggests that Tim and Lauren have been friends since their teenage years in Crossroads, implying they both know Lucas quite well.

Before the story unfolds in “Wild Horse Springs”, Lauren’s heart is shattered by Lucas. However, there appears to be a potential revival of their relationship down the line. The constant question of whether they will reunite or not forms the core of the entire Ransom Canyon book series. In the end, they ultimately find their “happily ever after” in “Indigo Lake”, which is the sixth and concluding novel of the Ransom Canyon series.

Yancy Grey Finds A New Love Interest After Ellie

An Artist Named Tori First Appears In Book 4

At the finale of Netflix’s first season of Ransom Canyon, Yancy Grey’s secret spouse unexpectedly appears, leaving a huge suspense for the upcoming season 2. Contrastingly, in Rustler’s Moon, Yancy takes up a handyman job at the retirement community in Crossroads – a role he didn’t play in the Netflix series. Moreover, there is an intriguing house, known as the “Gypsy House,” in town that captivates and disturbs him. This plot point, delving into his troubled past, was not present in the Netflix adaptation.

In the fourth novel of the Ransom Canyon series titled Sunrise Crossing, the protagonist Yancy continues to reside in Crossroads following a prison stint for minor theft. His goal is to rejuvenate an old town house and move on with life. However, his plans are disrupted when he discovers a secretive, attractive woman named Tori hiding in his attic. For enthusiasts of Yancy Grey from the Netflix series, Sunrise Crossing delves deeper into his background compared to other books.

In the second season of Netflix’s “Ransom Canyon,” Yancy finds himself drawn to Tori, a renowned artist struggling against her grasping parents. As time passes, Tori lends a hand on Yancy’s ranch, and in the end, they develop feelings for each other, potentially complicating Yancy’s relationship with Ellie.

Sheriff Dan Becomes More Of A Main Character

The Lawman Gets Another Shot At Love In Book 5

In the Ransom Canyon book series, Dan Brigman – Lauren’s father who apprehended his wife Margaret at the close of Netflix’s season 1, gets a chance at romance as well. In the fifth book, Wild Horse Springs, Dan comes across a solitary cowgirl boot on the roadside that leads him to Brandi, a country singer who roams from gig to gig in an attempt to distance herself from her troubled history. As they become acquainted, Dan develops feelings for Brandi and asks her to settle down in Crossroads. However, he is hesitant to keep her tied down. Given that Margaret is no longer a factor in the Netflix series, Brandi could very well be an intriguing new character in season 2 of Ransom Canyon.

In essence, Davis Collins isn’t given significant focus in the later books of the Ransom Canyon series. This is plausible since many elements of his villainous persona were exclusively created for the Netflix series. For instance, Davis and Yancy did not conspire to make Staten and Cap Fuller sell their ranches, as portrayed in the show. Moreover, Davis wasn’t employed by Austin Water and Power in the books either. The events involving Davis in Ransom Canyon season 2 are likely to deviate from the original storyline, given that he and Staten’s father (a politician) are attempting to oust him as the sole trustee of his Double K ranch, possibly creating new material for the series.
