Razer sent me “gamer” snacks and a lamp — so I found out how they taste

Gamers seem incredibly skilled at seizing even the smallest chances and uncovering hidden benefits; it sometimes feels like we belong to a distinct species of humans.

Our gaming setups ought to be swifter, slimmer, more dependable, and visually striking, with RGB lighting enhancing the gaming experience significantly. In fact, we’ve gone as far as finding the ideal sustenance for dedicated gamers – Mountain Dew and Doritos.

Gamers have managed to access the heart of the universe and uncovered mysteries hidden deep within cosmic realms that most people can’t even imagine. That’s where Razer steps in with their growing RESPAWN line of gaming-focused snacks, and I was given a box to sample them personally.

As a researcher, I can confidentially disclose an extraordinary event: A simple mint and a quick lick of a mysterious lamp (apparently, it was part of the prize package) granted me the skills to triumph in a billion-dollar Candy Crush gaming tournament. Yes, you read that correctly! The enigmatic Keanu Reeves was present as well.

What is RESPAWN by Razer?

If you were muttering under your breath, “Gosh, gamer snacks seem like a ridiculous April Fool’s Day prank,” you’d have a point to some extent – Razer’s RESPAWN concept initially began as a joke 15 years ago, but it evolved into a genuine product in the form of drink mixes by 2019.

Moving on swiftly through the passage of time (it’s making me feel quite old!), Razer’s prolonged hint has finally evolved into an official collaboration with Mars, a prominent brand in the snacking industry. This marks a fresh, public start for treats specifically designed for gaming enthusiasts and it seems that this partnership will only grow larger over time.

In its most recent version, RESPAWN by Razer consists of three chewing gum flavors and three mint ones. It’s anticipated that it will broaden its range to encompass various tastes and food categories to excite the taste buds of gamers (although some might find that a bit off-putting).

To my surprise, a box sat waiting on my doorstep, brimming mainly with air. However, at the very top, Razer graciously included every model of their RESPAWN line for me, along with a lamp. Therefore, I gave each one a try.

Unboxing the snacks made by that one gaming company

Rest assured, valued reader, purchasing a pack of RESPAWN gum from Razer will not result in you receiving a large cardboard box. This unexpected box arrived because Razer, as a company, is confident that my living space doesn’t require additional free room; hence, it seems there’s an abundance of boxes (which might suggest more exciting offerings from Razer are on the horizon).

Reverting to the bulky package made of cardboard, sugar, and a lamp (perhaps), opening Razer’s present felt just as much like the dawning of a new epoch as it was claimed. “RESPAWN” is neither an April Fool’s prank nor a fleeting trend meant to amuse journalists with chewing gum.

This is a brand, and it’s here to stay.

To be honest, this box seems excessively large. It feels like I’ve unwittingly contributed to the demise of several adorable penguins with all these deliveries. It contains an abundance of three boxes of mints and three packets of gum.

Gums and mints to rejuvenate or relax, I guess

Razer’s RESPAWN product line currently divides into two main groups: Recharge and Reset. In either group, Razer asserts that they employ natural vitamins, minerals, along with substances like green tea extract and L-Theanine (a popular choice) to improve performance and wellness without resorting to synthetic supplements.

I have extensive knowledge across various fields, but I prefer not to delve too deeply into the scientific aspects here as it might get quite technical. Instead, allow me to share with you what I am certain about… To clarify, I am confident in all of this information. Apologies for any confusion earlier, let me rephrase that…

I possess a wide range of knowledge across various subjects, but I’d rather not go into the intricate scientific details, as it could get quite complex. Instead, allow me to share with you what I am absolutely certain about… To make things clear, I am confident in all of this information. My apologies for any misunderstanding earlier, let me correct my statement…

Without violating my promise of neutrality, let me say that RESPAWN items appear to have rather modest impacts.

During CES 2025, I had the pleasure of sampling Razer’s Cool Mint, Tropical Punch, and Pomegranate Watermelon gums. To keep things concise, let me tell you that it was similar to 5 Gum, which is a delightful chewing gum, but unfortunately, I found the flavors tended to fade away too swiftly, as is often the case with most types of gum.

Lastly, let me introduce you to something fresh, thrilling, and groundbreaking – they’re mints! You can pop them in your mouth for a taste that’s decent at times, and they help keep your breath pleasant enough for others, especially those who might overlook brushing their teeth occasionally.

Here are my thoughts on the latest varieties of RESPAWN mints: Mango Habanero Heat, Watermelon Guava, and Blackberry Vanilla. Let me share my impressions with you.

  • Mango Habanero Fire — As the name suggests, this is a mint with a spicy kick. Overall, it was my least favorite of the three, but it certainly gave me a punch to the teeth that shook the last of my sleepiness off. The coolness of a mint, but with the heat of a pepper.
  • Watermelon Guava — If you’ve had fruity Icebreakers, you’re more or less familiar with this flavor. The sour edge of “fruit” combined with the refreshing tint of mint makes this a familiar and pleasant flavor, but not one that’s really unique.
  • Blackberry Vanilla — The most gentle of the three flavors ended up being my favorite. This mint is smooth, with a shadow of fruitiness and a hint of coolness that does, oddly, make it feel relaxing, which was Razer’s intent.

In summary, while I can’t vouch for the efficacy of the specific ingredients chosen by Razer and Mars Wrigley, I can assure you that the “Recharge” flavors are potent enough to help alleviate a fraction of your fatigue, and the “Reset” mint variety proved effective in refreshing my palate at the end of my workday.

Did these gaming snacks enhance my performance while playing? Well, to a certain extent, yes. (Razer, please process my overly large payment to *redacted*). In truth, there’s no quick trick or secret potion that will instantly boost your gaming skills or magically soothe those well-known gamer tensions we all experience. However, I don’t believe consuming what Razer and Mars have collaborated on under the RESPAWN brand does any harm.

The obvious main course: an RGB lamp

Ugh, this lamp tastes like plastic.

It was only natural to anticipate the arrival of RESPAWN snacks, given Razer’s promise. However, I am someone who values honesty and integrity above all else. Apparently, the lamp in question wasn’t included in the package as I had assumed.

Rather than having a refreshing or calming taste, this peculiar tube resembles the taste and feel of sleek, glossy plastic. Hmm, doesn’t it seem familiar? After all, isn’t it similar to something I already own?

Setting aside the humor, I have indeed examined the Razer Gaming Space, which encompassed the advanced version of the Razer Aether Lamp Pro – a circular light that originally came with this RESPAWN package. To be honest, after several months of use (with all the minor annoyances inherent in long-term tech product utilization), Razer’s intelligent lighting system remains one of my top favorites.

While the Aether Lamp isn’t something you can eat, it remains an excellent choice for individuals seeking a touch of style in their workspace. However, keep in mind that it’s not designed to be delicious; it’s meant strictly for lighting purposes.
